well yerr...even back the days on using a pentium/win98 system I had more them 8 audio tracks going - but it helped having a decent sound card/interface. These days, all the DAWS (sonar, cubase, lodgic, Live) inpose no limit on tracks. And I've had songs with about 15 stereo tracks going on an "old" PC (AMD XP200) is a sound blaster.... and that works out to 30 mono tracks. You;re anly going to hit limitions when you start using plugin for Eq reveb, etc.
So, what do you need?
A good soundcard/box if you're recording things like vocals, guitar... anthing external.
A good PC if you're going to be using alot of soft synth/samples - which come with your DAW.
The sothware is a personal choise - you can download demos of all.
Hops this helps
