    Cassette v. 1/4" v. 1/2" (life beyond the DAW)

BIG improvement over cassette. If you've been happy with cassette before, you'll love 1/4". I'm of the opinion that 1/4" is good enough for most purposes.

Recording a little flat? Tascam 388

Thanks, from your replies I'm guessing it's the belt, and not the tape stock (new) or pitch control (zeroed). Pinch roller / tape path are clean. I found one of Dave's old posts about changing the belt, I'm gonna give that a shot. By the way, anybody know about what size the 388 belt is...

Recording a little flat? Tascam 388

My recorded signal is coming out a little flat. The other day I recorded a long synth tone on the 388 and I noticed that it sounded slightly different on playback. I played the same note from the synth while playing back the recorded signal, and they were noticeably out of tune. So I'm not...

    Tascam 388 to CD?

Either scenario sounds like fun...I would definitely contribute.

    thinkin bout goin analog

The Tascam 388 is always worth considering. It's a real joy to use. Just about everybody here who has one seems to love it to death. 1/4" sounds great. 1/2" sounds better, but 1/4" will take you where you want to go.

    Synth with drawbars???

Roland Sh-3a adds voltage at different octaves with drawbars, just like an organ. It's a monosynth, however.

Tascam 388 makes loud squeaky noise

I use Quantegy 456 on my 388 and I experience the same problem. I'm inclined to think it is just the tape. On a positive note, if you keep your tape transports and heads clean, and you don't see a lot of shedding (gunk buildup on the metal parts) then you should be OK to use the tape. It...

    buying an 388, need help/advice!

A word on the head demagnetizer, this is an important tool and it's good that you'll have one. I demagnetize the 388 about once a week, or after about 10 hours of use, sometimes more if I'm being picky. When residual magnetism builds up on the heads and tape path it can begin to erase the high...

    whats everyones favorite synth?

Not a lot of synth users here? Well I only have an Sh-3 and a Juno 6. Personally I like the Juno 6. It was affordable and its been extremely reliable, never any problems. Big bass, nice rich pads, great organs. It actually does very realistic electric bass and organ tones, on top of all the...

    How Do I Bounce Tracks????

The Porta 02 manual tells you to do all bouncing to a separate deck. I don't think you can ping pong tracks inside the Porta 02, at least I was never able to. You should record something else onto track 4 to take full advantage of of the mixdown, then connect the stereo RCA outs on the back of...

Just curious as to why still analog??

I totally agree with that. I dislike having to baby the tape, and I imagine protools goes a lot quicker. But I still prefer the open reel. I use other digital tools to help deal with those shortcomings. I guess it works the way I'd like, for now.

    Dreaded Squealing Tape

Hmmm. Well I'm beginning to think it might be the belt, then. Both tapes were quite new. And I read another thread where a similar problem was attributed to the belt. How would I check for sure that it is the belt? And would that mean it's new belt time? I've read that they are fairly easy...

    What's your Tascam product?

Just started using a Tascam 388 Studio 8 a couple months ago. I also have a 564 Minidisk 4 track but its kinda buggy.

    Dreaded Squealing Tape

Its Quantegy 456. The new kind that looks like this: http://www.bigaudio.co.jp/images/deck_images/456.jpg I figured it was sticky shed but yeah, I didn't expect it from a new, sealed reel, I store them in my closet, wouldn't think the temperature would vary wildly in there. I have read a...
