I've used the edirol before. It's a little hard to get good expression from it the only "loudness" control you have is how hard you press the key and your volume control. It's hard to get a sense of realism from it. I sometimes use it for background strings of rock songs, but feel that it has a hard time holding itself up on its own.
It does make for good practice arranging songs though, and is much better than spending a few grand and a few gigs on really good samples. Plus I don't think they even sell this library anymore so the only way to get it is to download it.
