    Help me pick a microphone!

your suggestion for the CAD is a nice one. though, i'm trying to spend up to $400 on a mic that's worth around that much. I just don't feel comfortable spending only $50 more than i paid for the AKG. I want a nice mic to round out my collection and for some reason, i think to myself "if you...

    Help me pick a microphone!

I have a need for two things, actually. My Focusrite unit decided that it's phantom section didn't want to be alive any more, and dumped me. Unfortunate, but I can still use it with DI Basses and Dynamically mic'ed guitars, so that's a plus. So, I was looking at a Presonus Studio Channel because...

    Guitar just sounds...thin

double tracking = pwr. if you're gonna track some guitars, make sure to track them multiple times. no matter what your recording situation, amp setup whatever, it's always a sound (pun intended) idea. and track loud. at least with tube amps. If you're seriously just a beginner, take heed cause...

    MP3 Question

it should be under the "preferences, advanced, importing" string of things in Itombs. select "import using:" drop down box, hit MP3 encoder, and hit ok. rip as usual to your selected drive, then upload again. (I try to use 320kbs when possible, but that's just me) g'luck!:D

    recording mesa dual rectifier

well, i found what i was missing the whole time. I ended up tracking a very dynamic sounding CH2 with the gain at around 1pm. just enough to saturate it but still maintain the clean transients. panned right and left. I then took CH3 and drove the living crap out of it, gain MAXED! panned right...

    recording mesa dual rectifier

right, right. that's true, i'll post a file in a day or so... i've not tried QUAD tracking the guitar yet, i'm looking for that "killswitch engage" or "into eternity" type heavy sound. it just sounds so nice and fat without the "fizzy" sound i always come across. i always try to go easy on the...

Who went to school for recording? Who hometaught themselves?

I went to Full Sail, and I have to say, I agree with everyone that working under someone's wing gives GREAT experience. I would have never learned some of the things I did by just reading a forum post or two. On the other hand, i'll be in debt paying my loans for years to come. The initial...

    recording mesa dual rectifier

Hey all. Seems to me like every time i attempt to record this particular amplifier, it throws shi% in my face. I hear the great sound coming out of it, but i'm never able to capture what i'm hearing. No other amp has done this to me before, and i'm pondering getting a different amp, to be...

    bands wanting too much...

hey thanks for all the fantastic advice. these bands are REALLY creative and inspiring, but i just feel like i'm getting dicked. i think i may be the only act in town, as far as i am aware (besides the bigname studios) and i think that 20-30/hr (depending of course) is a reasonable rate at this...

    Electronics question about monitors.

try isolating your monitors from your power source by running them into something else. i.e. mac+monitors on one strip, everything else (guitar amps, processors, etc.) on another. ive battled hum and noise from external firewire drives before, and that ain't pretty sounding noise. that may or...

    DAE Errors

recommended disk speed is 7200 rpm. i use firewire hard drives, myself. you should probably upgrade to another gig of ram as well. i've found anything under 2g makes for an unstable (sometimes unusable) system. make sure your background processes aren't running while you're...

    Tracks Stuck In Group. HELP!

in the very bottom left corner there is a little arrow icon like this: << click on that, and it will display your tracks (seperate) and below that, your grouped tracks. click on your "guitars" track, for instance, and it will temporarily un-group your tracks so you can mix them further without...

Before you buy a PTLE Digi 002 or 003...

sorry, it should have read: "don't GO bashing me.." ah, wait. it does... didn't say you bashed me yet when i wrote it.

    PRS SE pickup suggestions

i just picked up an SE custom. wanted to stick some new pickups in it. I want the pickups to really compliment the wood that is used in these guitars, but don't know that much about that area of expertise. i've been partial to seymour duncan in the past, and like to play black metal, prog rock...

    Accurately Capturing Distorted/Chunky Guitar

My advice would be to ditch that Line6 amp altogether, and get something a little more recording friendly. here's my point: i just had a band roll through about two weeks ago, and the guitarist was playing his Ibanez through that exact amp, into a 1960b marshall flat. i couldn't get that amp...
