    Creating Bass Drops

Yeah it totally has been done a ton, but when I have clients that ask for it in specific parts and they're paying me it's usually best to give them a bass drop. I guess I'm just trying to find a fast way to make them a little more unique and have quick control over how long or short they are...

    Creating Bass Drops

Hey guys, I'm looking for a way to do my metal bass drops faster. I'm not a synth guy and really don't want anything complicated. I found some plugin called Sasquatch on Youtube. I went to their site, but there was almost no info on it. If you Google it, a forum comes up but most of the...

Has anyone tried STUDIO ONE's mastering suite?

I've used it. It's pretty cool being able to line an entire album up, create all the fades, etc. and have the nice large meters. Beyond that it's the same stuff. It's a nice touch but not a huge selling point for me.

    Palm mute butchery

Glad you found the problem. Something else to think about if you're getting mud in the sides would be to sum your low end to mono. That also makes life slightly easier for the limiter.

    Fraud by The Jongleurs mixes

Good stuff. I'm definitely gonna have a crack at this.

    Any MIXING Competitions out there?

RecordingReview.com had a contest every month for the Slate Digital Cup. That was a lot of fun but it's over now. I've been looking for the same thing. I'm definitely going to check out those links. Thanks for sharing.

    Recording already amped guitar

I'm in a similar situation in that I use an amp modeler (POD HD) most of the time and plugin sims some of the time. I almost always get better results from the POD than say Guitar Rig 5. My general approach is to get the guitar tone as close to being finished on the way in as possible. If you...

So which instrument do you record first?

Depends on the style/feel of the project. If it's more of a live band with extended jam sections I like to record the whole band at the same time with the goal of keeping the drum tracks. A lot of times in that situation I end up getting great bass performances as well. If it's a more modern...

Condenser mics for vocals on a budget

The ADK Vienna is an absolutely killer microphone! The price is the icing on the cake. The Vienna has quite a bit of top end that may need to be pulled back from time to time, but it's my go to for vocals. It's worth mentioning that I have a very large mic collection and many very high end...

    A 'Mesa question..

I've owned quite a few Boogies in the past as I worked at a store that was a dealer and I got awesome deals. I had similar issues with a Nomad combo. Can't remember what the cause was, but the guys at Mesa had our in house technician up to speed in one phone call and I never had anymore issues...

Lead guitar / amp and reaverb

I generally go for something with a lot of upper mids in the amp department. Most of the time I'll highpass pretty aggressively as well as slapping a tube screamer or a compressor in front of the amp. For reverb I just screw around with something until it sounds right. I'm a big fan of the CLA...

Firewire is dead, Long Live USB 3.0

Just put together a new recording computer build last night and this holds true. Finding a motherboard that met all my needs AND had firewire was such a pain in the ass that I just went the USB 3.0 route. It wasn't too big of a deal because I needed a new interface anyways. Now I've got a super...

    Is bass modeling necessary?

My absolute favorite tool for bass is iZotope Trash 2. I think they did a poor job marketing this plugin as they pushed it to be merely an over the top sound designer tool, but it's so much more than that. Typically I use the multiband distortion and put some grit on the midrange while leaving...

    Layering guitars?

I usually just roll with 2 hard panned and one up the center that's aggressively high passed. The center track helps with phase issues when listening in mono or on laptop speakers. If you add a high passed distorted bass track in there as well that creates a pretty fun sound as well.

    Reverb plugin

I absolutely love my PCM 90 hardware. I don't use it as much as I used to because there's a bug in Cubase where it doesn't remember the hardware routing from session to session which is a pain in my ass.
