I used to mix with "normal" speakers. What I would do is take a copy of the mix and try it out on different systems. Car stereo, Home stereo, Boom box etc. That way I could adjust to get more balanced mix. Actually I still do this even though I have reference monitors now.

Piano. My dad was a pianist but I never learned. I could never master playing two different things with each hand. I guess thats why I'm a guitarist lol
I always add a quick "slap" echo on my vocal tracks. Not long enough to be really be able to hear the repeat though, just enough to make it sound fuller. This helps me a lot.
Also the microphone and pre amp have a huge effect on the vocals as well.
