It sounds like I'm singing through a telephone.

Sounds like either the cable is one legged (as in, either pins 2 or 3 need to be resoldered, could be in the mic's XLR connection too.) or the mic's diaphram is shot. If you determine that it is the diaphram, Shure will send you a new mic for $55. Or you can put that $55 toward a better mic.

    FS: Vintage Altec 1592A Mixer/Preamp

More goodies found while cleaning out the closet! Here we have a vintage Altec 1592A 5 channel mixer and pre amp. Comes with 3 1588B transistors, and 2 15356A transistors. The 15356A's are questionable, but the 1588B's sound great. This was one of the first transistor units made. I don't know...

What to trust...monitors or consumer speakers?

If a set of "monitors" has EQ controls on it, then I don't consider them to be real monitors. Just having the EQ circuit in line causes phase and time discrepancies, even if you leave the controls at +/- 0 dB. If you feel that the overall sound of your monitors is lacking in a certain frequency...

Mixing/Mastering to compliment the .mp3 format?

I've been wanting to create some kind of "garbleizer" effect and run it at the end of my signal chain, to let me hear how the mix will sound as an mp3.

booking major acts part 3 (GODDAMN AGENTS)

There are 3 ways to get your foot in. First is to win the lottery and open your own venue. Second is to get a job or internship with an already established local promoter, learn the ropes, and make some contacts. Third is to work production on the bigger shows, stagehanding, working with a sound...

    I Bought A Sub...

As the title says, I came across a good deal on a Velodyne CHT 10. It makes noise down to 30 cycles, has a 150 W amp, 10" woofer, both RCA line level and bare wire terminal speaker level in's and out's, 85 Hz pass filter on the outputs to the nearfields, and sweepable volume and low pass filter...

    Kramer Pacer Imperial Reissue 2008

A buddy of mine bought one of the Baretta reissues. He's not very fond of it. He says if he had to do it over, he'd have bought an original on the bay.

    Making band practice sound better

What kind of music do you play and with what kind of amps? If this is any kind of metal or other high gain situation, 2 common "mistakes" that a lot of people make are too much distortion and not enough mid range. I know tons of distortion and scooped mids sounds really cool at low volumes when...

    Budget Sub

Howdy folks. I'm on the hunt for an "affordable" sub to compliment my Tannoy tops. Something along the lines of $400, new or used, and flat down to 30 cycles. I hear not so great things about the M Audio BX10S, and any of the other usual "brands" are either too rich for me or don't go down far...

What Do Kids Listen With These Days?

We have fans ranging in age from 13-45. I do have some step-up ear buds, Westone UM-1's and UM-2's that we use with our IEM monitor rig. I have been checking my mixes in those, as well as my old AT headphones and my somewhat modern AKG headphones.

What Do Kids Listen With These Days?

After being out of recording for a few years, I now find myself knee deep in the biggest, and most expensive, project I've ever done. Now armed with the UAD-1, my new (old) Tannoys, and the latest Sonar, I need some standards to check my mixes on. I figure a set of stock IPod buds are a...

    My new (old) monitors!

So after too many years on my Event PS8's, I now have the budget and need for a step up pair of monitors. I learned on a set of Tannoy System 1200's many years ago, and I am a believer in coaxial technology, so naturally, I've been keeping an eye out for something along these lines. I ended up...

    Me, the gear, or mastering?

Your mix isn't all that bad, actually, especially considering the level of gear you were dealt. In addition to everything that Farview said, Andy Wallace usually has a very large budget to work with. He can pick whatever room, drum, mic, and pre he wants.... And too often these days, especially...

    FS: Gadget Labs 824

Selling my old Gadget Labs Waves 824 soundcard. 8 in, 8 out. 24 bit, 48 kHz. For those that don't know, Gadget Labs was based out of Portland, OR, and went belly up years ago. In fact, they never even released drivers for XP. However, there is a user supported community, and they have...
