keep in mind that a four track will record on both "sides" at once- e.g. the whole tape. So when you flip the tape, you hear the music backwards. and it will usually, but not always, record at double the speed of a normal tape deck. So you will get 15 minutes recording time out of a 60 minute tape.

a mixer is the key. I had great results on my 414 with stero drums. but i used six mics through a pretty good mixer... get someone to play the drums while YOU record them... move the mics, tweek the faders, and listen back to it over and over again. Its going to take a while to get everything...

if you are just getting started with reel to reel, you might consider an 8 track unit like the Tascam 38 or TSR-8. A sixteen track recorder will neccisitate a larger mixer, which will cost you a lot more in the long run. It may be a good idea to stick with 1/2 tape too, since it's the only size...
