What is the cheapest way to record in your opinion

So far I think the option of the 2-channel audio interface and reaper is the best idea. Don't get me wrong, cassette four tracks are really great for getting down ideas, preserving analog charm in your sound etc, making a good lo-fi indie rock album... It was my main recording tool for years...

    Getting tracks ready for mastering

Im glad I asked ahead of time. I have all the drum takes on analog tape and everything else is tracked digitally (with plenty of headroom). I was already planning on going back and remixing the drums on a few songs, might as well do them all at this point. You see, my approach is a little...

    Getting tracks ready for mastering

That's really helpful stuff- thanks. I did push the drum tracks quite a bit, but I have them on tape so I can mix them back down to logic at a lower level if I need to. I was still in the "I've got to get it as loud as I can to sound professional" mindset... Seems like as long as I leave...

    Getting tracks ready for mastering

I am currently working on a recording that is going to be sent in for professional mastering. This is the first recording project I have done that is going to be commercially released and I want to make sure everything goes smoothly. I am using Logic Express 8. My main question is about the...

    Critique my drumming?

you sound a bit "cymbal-happy" ie. to many crashes at odd times. It is a sort of primus-like groove, which means your following in some pretty huge footsteps drumming-wise. And personally, i would take that splash cymbal and throw it right out the window. A splash makes a GREAT frisbee...

    colored strat knobs

I can't seem to find colored strat knobs anywhere, specifically red and blue. Do these exist? All i can find are skulls or dice or knobs with abalone inlays... where are the plain colored knobs??

Better 4 track for bedroom: tascam or yamaha

keep in mind that a four track will record on both "sides" at once- e.g. the whole tape. So when you flip the tape, you hear the music backwards. and it will usually, but not always, record at double the speed of a normal tape deck. So you will get 15 minutes recording time out of a 60 minute tape.

    just got a supraphonic...

I'm recently the proud owner of a 6.5x14 ludwig supraphonic snare. I already can tell that this thing screams. however, Im not sure about the heads that were on it when I bought it- they are the origanal ludwigs. It was tuned very very tight (ala primus) and I am looking for a deeper sound. I...

    muffling cymbals??

the two best peices of advice i've heard so far are the earplugs, and using broken cymbals. I think attacking the drummer by saying the reason his cymbals sound too loud is because he's no good, is stupid. some people just hit hard and thats the way it is. maybe his kick and his snare aren't...

    424 mk3 stereo drum tracks

by the way, you can ignore what I just said and use 2 mics straight into the four track. I've had good results puting one mic about two or three feet in front of the set, about 3 feet up, pointing down a bit towards the top of the kick. The other mic I put up high above the drummers head...

    424 mk3 stereo drum tracks

a mixer is the key. I had great results on my 414 with stero drums. but i used six mics through a pretty good mixer... get someone to play the drums while YOU record them... move the mics, tweek the faders, and listen back to it over and over again. Its going to take a while to get everything...

    Electricity usage of amps

Thanks- i apriciate you clearing this up for me. What you say makes sense, because I've noticed my yamaha CA1000 hifi amp gets really hot when set to class A, even if it's silent. Because of this I never use the class A setting. So my KRK monitors say they have 100 watt dynamic power. I assume...

    Electricity usage of amps

this may sound stupid, but I was wondering if the amount of power that an amp uses is more a function of the volume setting or of the amount of signal going through it. For example, which would use more power (in regards to my electric bill): A: I leave my guitar amp or powered monitors on...

Reel to Reel, 16 Track or 24, and which brand/model...

if you are just getting started with reel to reel, you might consider an 8 track unit like the Tascam 38 or TSR-8. A sixteen track recorder will neccisitate a larger mixer, which will cost you a lot more in the long run. It may be a good idea to stick with 1/2 tape too, since it's the only size...
