Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

I’ll give that a try. I’ve also found someone else nearby who has an R8 so I’m going to visit and compare the tape path on their machine.

Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

I think a video would be great but I guess would show that the clearance is really small or non existent. I really need another R8 owner to check the clearance on their machine.

Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

Yes but the capstan spindle is still rotating when the R8 is at stop. That’s why I’m concerned about the clearance.

Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

Thanks for the photos Rob. I think the manual shows the tape path with the pinch roller engaged, so you would expect the tape to be touching the capstan. Are the photos taken from your machine?

Could anyone with a Fostex R8 please have a look at this thread and reply if possible. https://homerecording.com/bbs/threads/fostex-r8-capstan-spindle-to-tape-clearance.421431/#post-4772913 Thanks

Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

Thanks for the reassurance but I am a worrier! Let’s see if we can get someone with an R8 to check the clearance on their machine.

Picture of the entire tape path is attached. With the pinch roller not engaged the tape is either touching or so close I can't see the gap.

Fostex R8 capstan spindle to tape clearance

I've just bought a Fostex R8 and have noticed that the clearance between the capstan spindle and the tape is close to zero. Of course I mean when the capstan roller is not engaged against the capstan spindle. I've attached an image. (yes I know it all needs a good clean, I'll get to that!)...

    Tascam 238 Story...

And more progress! I found a guy who is doing a similar project and has uncovered the Tascam Accessory2 port commands for remote control. Have a look to https://github.com/bgencarelle/Tascam-MIDI-bridge When I get time, I'll write up the list of codes (which are hidden away in a software...

    Tascam 238 Story...

Okay I made some progress! Whilst the RC-88 remote port on the Tascam 238 could provide one way to access the machine for remote control from my DAW, I found out from Tascam that the Accessory2 port on the 238 (and all later Tascam Multitrack Machines) actually contains two comms circuits on the...

    Tascam 238 Story...

Thanks for the explanation. I probably didn't explain what I'm trying to do very well. I would use a Tascam ATS-500 Synchronizer to allow the 238 to be slave locked to my DAW (Cakewalk) which would provide the master LTC timecode source. However, what I want to do is also control as many of...

    Tascam 238 Story...

Can I ask if you ever came across a copy of the 238 Serial Connector protocol? I want to control a 238 from my DAW system.

    Tascam 238 Serial Control Protocol

Can anyone help with a copy of the Tascam 238 Serial Port Protocol. It is mentioned on Page 25 of the User Manual but says you need to contact TASCAM for detailed technical information. I will try contact them but don't hold out much hope of Tascam having a copy after all this time. Any help...
