    Clipping/peaking out

I have experience with it. I'm not sure I'm following the questions in the second paragraph. It's a mic preamp. You can record anything with it. Acoustic guitar, sure. Personally, I would say it is context-dependent and outcome-dependent regarding whether I'm "slamming it" -- it's more about...

    Balanced/Unbalanced patchbay questions

@flyingace I don't really understand. Are you exposing the outputs of the MPA, the inputs, or both via the patchbay? If the inputs, that's interesting since they're mic-level and they pass phantom power.

My singing vocals don't sound good. Advice?

Oh yeah, people have recorded in all kinds of environments. There's also Elliott Smith who recorded frequently at home. Or Sebadoh. Or Guided By Voices. Or The Thermals. In my experience, the ways that bad rooms dominate a recording are in ways that are really obvious. For example, bass...

My singing vocals don't sound good. Advice?

I agree with Smithers, Don’t go looking for gear. Make the most of what you have. Experiment with the mic placement, positioning of yourself in relation to it, and so forth. Try out the SM57 in parallel with the Blue, and blend them to taste. Try recording in the bathtub. Etc. It just takes time...

    Audio interface with remote footswitch

I use a Tascam DP-03 for tracking and it has a remote footswitch so you can control record, play, punch-in, and go back to set point all with your foot. This revolutionizes the tracking process. I tried googling for “Audio interface with remote footswitch” to see if I could find a...

    Clipping/peaking out

This is the original problem from the OP. It's probably as simple as she needs to turn the output knob on the ART all the way counter-clockwise (because it is on top of input gain on the unit) and then adjust the Portastudio down until it just barely isn't clipping anymore. (After making sure...

    Clipping/peaking out

You're both literally just speaking in generalizations as though they are 100% right all the time. The ART Tube MP has a variable output level that is max +10. This is a direct copy/paste from the manual downloadable on the ART site: There's no attenuator necessary here. There's an output...

    Clipping/peaking out

"Lots you have to learn about gain staging." I don't think so. What I've said is true or you can correct it. Ad hominem fallacy right here.

    Clipping/peaking out

While true, that doesn't make too much sense in the context of this specific question. The gear OP has is set up to accept input level between -10 and +6 so any level in this range is acceptable. The only reason to use an attenuator in addition to everything else in that chain is if there is no...

    Clipping/peaking out

I am not sure, you may have in mind the Tascam cassette-based recorders. This is a digital recorder with the following specs: XLR [BALANCED] Connector: XLR-3-31 (1: GND, 2: HOT, 3: COLD) Input impedance: 2.4 kΩ Standard input level: −8 dBu Maximum input level: +8 dBu Standard jack...

    Clipping/peaking out

Hi ecc83. Just want to offer another perspective. I am a software engineer by trade and I suppose that qualifies me as a "computer whizz." I hold a computer science degree and a masters degree in software engineering and have about 20 years experience in the field. You have most likely used my...

    Clipping/peaking out

What makes you say the Tascam is geared towards "low signal level." The Tascam has multiple input settings as well as a switch on the back for selecting various input levels which includes line level.

    Clipping/peaking out

@Emma B I'm sorry that you were misled here. It's hard to read this thread and see such confident assertions made which are actually wrong and ignorant. Let's take them in turn. Actually the TRIM control on the DP008EX is context-specific. It depends on: a) the port being used in the back b)...

Smoothing out vocal rasp with compression?

rob aylestone's suggestion is the best one imo. Compression will make the raspy part more noticeable. A targeted EQ in the right place is the most likely to reduce it.
