noise /flutter / problem when recording

Hello

I dont know what to do about this issue.

I have a tascam 388.
*I have a flutter / when recording to my tape.

It sounds a little bit like a hard compressed mpeg or mp3

Note: When you listen only three the mixer, there is no problem at all.
It appers on the tape

This is what i have done.

Tested line in / mic in. = no difference.
De-magnaticed the heads= no difference
Record with and without DBX. = no difference.

I have tested to play a old recording and discovered that it was free from
flutter / noise on that tape. So i guess that my play-head is ok.

I have also tried to record at highest var-speed. It's better quality, but you can
still hear the problem in the background.

any tips?

thanks /Fredrik

The record head is the same as the play head, so if it plays okay it *should* record okay.

Any way you can post an audio clip of the issue?

Flutter

A flutter would usually be caused by a quickly rotating defect, such as a flat spot on the pinch roller or a flat bearing in the capstan. It would typically manifest on both recording and playback.

Yeah, I think he's referring to something else, not flutter in the 'tape' sense of the word...

Gonna venture a guess here, but...

I think it may possibly be related to demagnetization or a tape/head contact issue.

This is not flutter in it's truest sense.

Q: is this happening entirely across all tracks, or perhaps on edge tracks, 1 & 8? Maybe including 2 & 7?

:spank::eek:;)

Q: what do you mean by tapehead contact issue? Should i dissassembly it and assembly it again?

A: i think It's all over all tracks but i am not 100 % sure.
I can do a check on that tomorrow morning and get back with this info.

Thanks in advance /F

...

Tape/head contact issues could have to do possibly with the tape tension which is adjustable, or excessive head wear which can only be corrected by having the r/p head relapped.

Thanks for The answer.
I have noticed that The tape can do a little "jump" sometimes when i FF or REW.

I have Done a new test today. The "noise"problem happens over all 8 tracks and it doesent matter if i record with dbx or not.

I took a quick look today again and could see that the tension rollers, as i understand, where not in correct position according to the maintenance guide.

Q: R112 and r212 was the only two that i understood how to adjust. The other 5 "R---" was little to complicated to understand how to adjust.
Are you supposed to do all 7 "R---" or do you only have to do r112 and r212?

I have now tryed to adjust The tension rollers.
I can see that it has a positiv effect on my drop outs when recording.

I can even see that a older recording become a little bit better.

Now... I hear The dropouts more On tr.:1278 compared to 3456.

I do understand r112 and r212. But not The other 5 R"s
