Brand Spanking New to this Music Production thing!!!

Morning everybody!

My new housemate is a DJ, and does a bit of production on his PC too. He played a few of his compositions and they were good quality funky beats.

He promise he'd leave me a copy of Cubase on my desk before he went on holiday, true to his word, he did. Good man!

So I have a copy of Cubase (Sx2?) a headfull of ideas but absolutely no idea how to do anything!!!

These questions must get on the nerves of the more senior members, so I'll get a quick apology in now , Sorry!

What do I need to get started? I take it some plugins for effects, drum machines and stuff?

Also any ideas where I would get samples from?

Does anybody know of any good tutorials to give me a grounding (so i can produce a simple song and work from that)...?

And any other help or advice ismuch appreciated

there is only one program you need: REASON, REASON, REASON!!! It's the greatest I've heard for any kind of groove production, and this is coming from a rock and roll guy. If you're going to make the same old 4 on the floor stuff all you need is some simple drum samples.

So are you saying this program 'Reason' should be used instead of cubase?? Or is it a plug in to get some funky drum loops on the go?

Been reading up on stuff in work, found loadsa samples, so thats ok.
I need to be chopping, timestretching and stuff like taht to make beats and samples fit, right?

Reason will do EVERYTHING you need to do AND it will work within cubase (via rewire)...it's made by propellerheads and it's fantastic. It works along with a program called Recycle (Aphex Twin made this program famous) it does everything you need: sampling, time stretching, advanced editing, effects, etc... the only thing it doesn't do is record audio and allow VST intruments...but hey, that's what Cubase is for!

a VST (virtual sound technology) instrument is basically a software only instrument...Cubase VST 5.0 had a major success with this. It basically refers to software synths (pro -53, absynth) samplers (kontakt, halion) and drum machines (lm4, Waldorf attack) etc...

I've seen some pretty major VST instruments come out recently, espescially the Arturia minimoog.

Basically you would use VST instruments with cubase and play them via the internal piano roll or a midi controller keyboard.

No, not at all. But if it's only an evaluation copy I'm sure it has certain limitations on it that may prevent you from all of Cubase's functionality.

Thats what the software vendors usually do aint it..? To be honest the program is so big and complicated I doubt I'll notice if some of the funtionalities missig anyways.

I'm guessing thats gonna come with a bit of experience, so that by the time I notice I'm hooked, and then will have to buy a copy!!!!
