Tascam 488 - preamp needed?

I've been recording with my Tascam 488 MkII for a few years now with decent results. However, I think the results could be even better.

I've been using Oktava MK-012 condensers plugged directly into the XLR inputs, and have been using the on-board preamps.

Should I use an external preamp instead of the on-board feature? Also, can anybody recommend a good compressor? I mainly record acoustic guitar and vocals with the mics. I record electric bass direct.

Thanks!

When I bought a cheap (read $250) channel strip multifunction mic pre to use with my 488 about 12 years ago my sound improved considerably. Part of it was the mic pre and part of it was getting to know the 488 better and what the best rec levels were. If you have the $$$ I would buy the pre. :D Just my $.02
