Hi Alan, long time no talk.. you may remember me, I'm from way over here, in the United States, Monterey California.. I'm going to check the threads when I get home, but just thought I'd check in with you first.. I purchased four Avid Ultra 320 scsi drives.. formatting one at a time, terminated with no other external drives connected. The first one formatted just fine, however it will not initialize. I'll get into it more when I get home, I may not even need any help on it, but do you suppose I should set the jumpers on the hard drive exactly as they are set on my two working avid units? same units exactly, could be different internal drive, I'll find out when I get home and open them up. thanks, while I had a minute just thought I'd shoot you a message. Let me know if you'd prefer me to message you in the forums, if I remember correctly maybe that's better for you (?) I don't remember for sure. Anyway, Got four of them, excellent condition, with all cables, $100 US.. heck, the caddies are alone are worth that. Thanks again. Voice recognition.

Update; Well, this is interesting.. I tried a low level format on another one of the four drives I purchased. Again, it formatted fine, but it would not initialize to FAT32.. On a hunch, I decided to see if it would allow initialization as HFS+ . It did. And I re-booted the recorder, and the Avid external drive, and the the external drive mounted properly, and is showing 11 hrs rec time, if using 24 tracks. So all seems normal there, but since I run Windows, I'm sure I won't be able to use MX View, with an HFS+ drive, correct? (I don't use it much anyway) But will I also, not be able to exchange data to and from my other drives, which of course are FAT32..? Obviously, the best outcome would be to get the four new drives to initialize as FAT32.. But not sure if I can get in to the cases, in order to configure jumpers, if that's what's necessary.. It's like a little strong box! Thanks of course.. Dan.. ..UPDATE, Sunday, 09/22; Able to Smart Copy from scsi FAT32 (internal MX drive) to external scsi with the HFS+ format. Assuming reverse/load will be same, will check. Data transferred successfully, will also check audio directly from the HFS+ drive and update later today.

Well there is a bit to think about here.

I have bought drives that act up for no reason at all, and usually I just write them off, never thought about trying HFS, may have to try this at some point. You could try plugging the drives into the PC and formatting the drive using the PC to Fat32, then put it back in the MX and see if it works second time around.

Regarding having 1 drive Fat32 and the other HFS+ as I understand it if you transfer a project from FAT32 to HFS+ drive the project will convert to a MAC format file AAC, and vice versa if you go the other way. I may be mistaken as I have never tried it. You could try posting this question up on Here as there is a lot of MX specialised people on that site. (Sorry MODS, I am not trying to plug another site it's just these questions are a bit MX2424 technical.)

Let me know how you go.

    Cheers
    Alan.
