2488 neo data all lost

my buddy and i both own neos. he called to tell me he was trying to burn a cd of 6 finished songs when suddenly the cd tray opened and all his data disappeared. supposedly it had started to burn the cd when this happened. now it shows 3 partitions. one empty and the other two a the exact amount of memeory used 32K. they both show song 001 which is blank when you load it.
any thoughts on recovery, other than taking in to someone?? i was hoping there would b a feature which would tell me what they actually did. i have a feeling the reformatted by mistake. any help appreciated-dave
 
went and got my buddies machine. can't pull anything up. when i go to disk is shows three partitions. 1 & 2 say 32760 MB free space. partition 3 says 2578 free. no song titles, nothing anywhere. if you load songs from any partition, it comes up song 001. even the demo is gone.
