VS-880: Stereo delay guitar + another guitar = unwanted noise

I am currently recording an original song on a Roland VS-880 hard-disc recorder. I have some rhythm guitar with (Roland) stereo delay (that echoes to the beat of the song) on one channel. I have some wah-wah guitar one another channel. When you play each guitar back separately, everything is fine. When you play back both guitars at once there is an unwanted noise that sounds like someone having a microphone on while dragging the microphone across the floor. I am not "pegging out the VU meters". I have had a similar problem on a song that was all keyboards: a keyboard with stereo delay combined with another keyboard giving a similar unwanted noise. Is there a way to avoid this while keeping the stereo delay? What is happening here? I would guess some phasing problem?
