midi Control of VS1680: Digitech Control-8 ?

I thought it would be convenient to control the "start, "stop", "rec", etc. functions from a footswitch. So I bought a Digitech Control-8 midi foot-controller and tried to make it work.
I have done a lot of computer programming, so I thought I could figure it out, but I apparently know nothing about midi. I can't get the slightest response. Any clues ? Is this even possible ?

Thanks Tom. I did call Digitech (I can't remember who) and the answer was "No" it won't do that. So I took the Control-8 back to MARS.
Still looking for something that will do it. Needs to send MMC messages.
