I am new to the JV-1080 and am having some trouble getting sounds to play in patch mode-- well, I can't get any sound unless I'm in performance mode. The parameter button is off, the little asterisk is in the window, the midi message light is indicating imput...what's wrong?

Have you tried asking this on a dedicated platform for VS recorder users?

Oh now I see it after reading again, this is not a VS-1080(New Model?) but a "synthesizer".

Since this is a Roland forum and the JV is a Roland product.....
The midi light goes on the the JV1080 no matter what channel the midi data is coming in on. I think patch mode only receives on channel 1... therefore, check the midi channel. Just a guess

The correct answer is: the JV-1080 in PATCH mode is set to receive on channel 1. Thanks for the help! Sorry I posted in the wrong forum.
