I'm a little slow on the uptake - just noticed that Logic 9 has been released. I ordered the upgrade for Logic Express (that's what I use - got 8 now).

They included "track notes"! I've been wanting to add a little text/note to each track, including things like preamp gain (and other analog channel strip) settings, which mic I used, and the placement, etc. - I begged on the apple support forum and tried to make a AU to do it myself (but gave up after an hour or so ). Anyway, not the biggest new feature, but that alone was almost enough for me to order.

Also a bunch of editing improvements, looks like -- anything to keep from having to practice on my instruments

Flex Time alone is worth the update. You will LOVE Flex Time.

Flex time looks very appetizing indeed - something that was obviously lacking from previous Logic editions.

This transform/replacement tool - for converting audio files, say a kick drum track, to MIDI for use with samplers - also looks like a big improvement over the old methods. Chef, since you've made the upgrade, would you mind running a couple tests of drum track conversions to see how well it works?

Just picked it up, and not one bit too soon. I have really sloppy bass and snare work I just tracked that I need to test flex time on

Doing an upgrade from 8, so crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. If I can pull it off, I will upload a sample of the before/after on the part I need to attempt to fix. My band recorded a song with a friend but we didn't use a metronome and were drinking a bit. So it wanders, and when I put rhythm down there are a couple off parts. I would re-track, but I figured this could be the flex time test. Also, flex time scares me in the same way autotune does.

Logic 9 is pretty darn cool. The bass/snare part I recorded to supplement a song was off in a few places and so I used flex time to correct it (hastily, I might add).

    Here's a clip of a fuckup in the original:http://files.me.com/goodtimesrecordings/7fmba0.mp3
    Here's the fixed version: http://files.me.com/goodtimesrecordings/pkmdcp.mp3

Here's what the screwup looks like on the original:
    Here's the fixed version:

(the zoom is not set to the entirety of the audio you heard, but zoomed to the mistake)

Here's the whole song if you want to give it a listen http://files.me.com/goodtimesrecordings/mczkp5.mp3

The more a segment is compressed, the more green it gets. The more a segment is smooshed, the more orange it gets. I was in the light phases of green/orange here. Also the back half of the segment I could have manually tweaked to fit a little better, but it ended up sounding alright enough auto-smooshed from manually moving the last bass hit.

Again we didn't use a metronome on it so it swings... and when I started messing with flex time, each listen brought new mistakes I wanted to fix. Dangerous!

I'll post again when I get it -- it doesn't look like it'll actually ship (to me) until later this month.

GTRTony - you already got it?

Yeah I went to the apple store on Michgan Ave. in Chicago. They didn't have it on the shelf but got me an upgrade version from the back.

I'm waiting for it to come to my college store so I can get it mad discounted, but all the new features make me drool. Every single one of them is something I've pined for Logic to get, and pretty much everything on my list was hit. I don't think I have any desire to switch to a different DAW ever again.

Mine came in the mail yesterday, and I opened up a couple of projects with it -- it didn't have to do a file conversion (like going from 7 to 8), which is nice, and the user interface looked a lot like 8, which is nice, I suppose. Wish I had more time to mess with it. Maybe this weekend.

Cool. Keep us posted, chef. I'd love to see how that MIDI transform function works.

Tony, thanks for sharing the flex-time demo. Looks very useful!
