Cool Edit 2000 making 128 recovery files

I've been using CE2000 for a long time, but not intensively. It has started to behave strangely recently. When started up, it delays longer than normal on "Checking recovery files", and I find that it has been busy creating 128 (yes, 128) empty .tmp files in my working folder. The program then runs, but rather slowly, and it seems like only one of the 128 work files is used, the rest remain empty. All 128 files are deleted on program completion. Any ideas on how to avoid this behaviour will be welcome.
 
The delay on "Checking recovery files" was due to having disabled write caching on my hard disk. It is now re-enabled, and "improves disk performance, but a power outage or equipment failure might result in data loss or corruption", and CoolEdit is back up to speed.

The 128 empty workfiles are still being created and deleted on every run, but are not noticeable.
