vocals to Cakewalk

I'm awaiting delivery of my Cakewalk Pro 8.0 and I understand that you are able to record vocals and other instruments as well as midi. I've never used a computer to sequence or record, so I'm REALLY STUPID in these matters. My question is, how do you connect a mic or guitar to record to Cakewalk? I'm assuming there must be some type of interface connector or something - but what?

Your computer probably has a soundcard (the thing that makes the various noises that you hear from the computer) in the back. See this page: http://www.homerecording.com/sound_card_basics.html

As far as midi is concerned, Cakewalk has a function to figure out midi messages from an audio track, so long as the audio isn't monophonic (one note at a time... no chords). This would then allow you to, say, make a canned sax track which follows a vocal, or to automatically make a score for a recorded solo.

Hope this proves useful
