recording problem

Okay, I've been using Home Studio 8.0 to make
mixes of material from a Tascam 488MKII. For the most part, I've been successful in recording to the PC. However, I've had a few recordings where the cakewalk file may change the pitch on chunks of audio:
1.) I generally try to defrag each time prior to recording, is there anything else I should do to prevent this from happening? It's a bummer to mix stuff down and find this in the file afterwards.
2.)I've read in various places that it's recommended to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to remove various programs running in the background,
my question is, how do you know which ones are safe to turn off that won't impact recording?-does somebody know of a breakdown of all those abbreviations (e.g. Aticwd32, etc.)?
Thanks in advance.

If you control-alt-delete and endtask everything but explorer and systray, you should be fine(do this before launching any software). Unless some of your recording software or soundcard launches something important at initial startup, but you will find out soon enough.
