Question A problem with playback or buffer size

i am very new to the home recording process but i am learning slowly. I use cakewalk sonar 1.0, a delta 44 sound card, and a behringer UB1662FX mixer. I am haveing problems with the playback of instruments while i am recording them. There is a delay that makes it impossible to hear what i am playing. I have tried to mess with the buffer size but that only makes it sound really bad when i lower it. I have also tried to mute the channel that i am recording so i wont be able to hear it but that doesnt work either. If any one has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks so much.

Turn off Input Monitoring in Sonar (Options > Audio > Input Monitoring) and monitor directly off your mixer.
