audio input levels

In Sonar, for each track there is an audio level bar. I realize that when it hits the RED, it's clipping. But if I record every track to the max, or just under the red, then the tracks get cluttered. About what level should I have each track recording in at???

Moderate levels work fine gererally. Look for info on proper gain staging on the analog ends as a primary issue, 24 bit record level falls into line after that.
