Mpc and logic (midi)

I have an MPC 500 and I have always used Logic as my DAW.
I have been recording my MPC into Logic through audio, using the phono outs.

However, now I want to try and record the MPC through midi data instead because it is alot easier to edit and manipulate.
I preferably want to use it as a midi controller. However various sources say that this isn't possible.
For example: Mr Mig Logic Studio (Akai MPC MIDI) - YouTube

I just dont see why not.
Also, I have looked into this quite thoroughly and it has been irritating me alot.
Most tutorials are talking about using the MPC as a 'midi slave': Logic Pro: How to Sync the MPC 500 | Winksound - YouTube
Im still about confused about what the benefits of this is.

There is also this: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=86489
Which is exactly what I want to do but I have tried it and Logic doesnt sense anything, maybe im not setting up the Logic environment correctly.

Any help would be appreciated, this has been frustrating me for a while.
