Ableton Live can't record midi nightmare

Hoping someone on hm knows ableton live.

I've been tweaking things for 5 hours and still can't record anything.

I can record by clicking on the grid in midi editor to the right of the piano roll but not by playing on mac keyboard or external keyboard.

Global record is on, arm is record enable, but when i click on the circle it won't blink red. Why can't i record?!!! please! please! help! I feel like a retard!
 
got it to work. turned out i had the EXT (external sync) button enabled.

But now the tempo keeps getting faster on me after a while. I put in 80 after the loop ends and starts over it plays at 90 and then 120, etc. why?!!
