a rock instrumental-
It's called "ZOOM"

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...?bandID=661726

my 1st soundclick post, it took me forever to get it going for some reason.
but now it is....

i don't know how the streaming will sound...
i tried to set it up for free downloads.....
i just give this stuff away!
LOL

I think you're very talented and it all sounds very good but VERY VERY dated. I listened to all of your stuff too. Overall it's good.

hm...
i don't get the 'dated' comment.

it definitely doesn't sound like everything else on the radio, which for me, is a good thing.

i don't care for the synthy industrial drum parts in certain sections of it, for sure...
maybe THAT's what dates the sound?

it's the ZOOM123 drum machine, and it was a stock patch..
actually, the first time i programmed the machine, that's why it's called 'zoom'.

i wonder, if i could line up the drum track, in sonar, and put a tempo map over it to trigger some other drum sounds?
that's one of the things i've got to learn how to do...

thanks for listening, and commenting!

I think for me the guitar tones all sound very dated. Very 80'sish. The extreme reverb, delays, etc. on them. I guess I like rawer vintage tone sounding guitars and I guess that's your tone so that's not changing. The song at times sounds like a theme song from "Top Gun". Sorry if I sound like a dick, not trying to be. And what do I know? You're still more talented than me and my stuff gets compared to stuff from the 90s so I am guessing you're ten years older than me. (I'm 35):)

BTW - I listened to your CD tour, that was cool!

well, the guitar tones are coming from a mesa boogie mark2b, which is vintage 1981.
so, you're right there.!

the speaker is a roland 1x12 with celestion greenback, so another strike against the classic sounds!

;)

me, i like, and prefer, vintage tones, so you got me on that one!!
and yeah, it's definitly got a 'theme' feel to it, which again, was the idea.

honestly, the last thing i want, is to sound like everything else out there, which pretty much means i can't use a triple rectifier!
LOL

tho, i love the sound of a bogner shiva...
and some would probably say i'm still sittin' in the vintage pool with that one.

now, as far as the reverbs, etc.....
the rhythm guitar tracks are bone dry.....
only the solo has a touch of delay on it, and no reverb.
the drums have some reverb on them, that i think came with the patch/patterns.
the chimey guitar parts have a touch of chorus, and i swear i don't think they had reverb on them, but i can't remember..
this one i recorded 6 years ago.

i've always liked the spacey vibe from a long delay on solo lines...
maybe it's leftover from listening to 'classic' rock when i was growing up...

you can tell, from the cd tour, that this type of tune, isn't the only thing i do....
but i DO enjoy putting together instrumentals, and as many as i have, they cover a lot of ground.

understand..
i'm not trying to be defensive....

i'm only trying to understand, something that i obviously don't have a finger on the pulse of....
so i appreciate your candor!

maybe i'll try an experiment..
do a new instrumental, and mix everything bone dry....
go for some more modern scooped tones... and see if it still sounds the same! LOL
seriously, maybe it's just in my genetics, and nothing i'm going to change is going to matter!
:D

It's all good and I'd love to hear some bone dry guitar tones. Could sound really cool and maybe bluesy. Do that ASAP! I want to hear. :)

You got great gear and you can hear it. I'm a gearhead too, mostly Fender stuff . I play through an original 60s Black Face Twin that has been hotrodded and rewired and muddy it up with a TubeScreamer TS-808 (original).

Hey Gonzo . . . you're really good at music.

This sounds exactly how I think a song like it sounds should sound. If that makes sense . . .

BTW, a little off topic. . . but I listen to your Bad Moon Rising like every day. I never even realised what song it was until yesterday when I heard a cover of how the song actualy is. I'm like . . . "Oooooh! That's the song!". So you did a really good job of putting your own spin on it.

Anyways, you've mastered what you're trying to do, and if you didnt then it sure as hell sounds like it.

BTW. . . You shouldn't put that up for free download. It's too damn good.

Damn, Gonzo. That's some good playing.

I'd really like to know how you make those little squeals at the beginning..

Whammy pedal? It reminds me of Trey Anastasio's stuff with Oysterhead a little.

The fake drums do detract from the whole package.

A+ on your guitar playing, dude. I'm not too into the big verbs and delays either but credit where credit is due.

This style of playing is not new by any means.... Vai, Satch, Beck, a bunch of others, come to mind. But it does take a whole pile of talent to do it well which you do. Lots of cool parts all put together keeps it interesting.....

Great song Gonzo. I think the guitars sound absolutely perfect for this genre. This stuff wouldn't sound right with any other tones. Great playing and arrangement. I'm not too big on the synth drums, but whatever. That's just me. The mix sounds great. Good job! :)

I joined a short time ago and only now discovered this MP3 clinic forum. I like hearing what others are accomplishing from their home studios. I’ve only started browsing through the posts. Lucky for me one of the first tunes I listen to is a rock instrumental, something I relate to.

Nice guitar chops. Exceptionally clean performance. Every note cuts through crystal clear. The tune has interesting changes and is arranged well. Each section flows naturally and comfortably. Excellent tone choices for the guitars.

Some suggestions I have to suit my tastes would be to condense intro and establish the groove a little sooner. I would have also like to hear a more distinguishable melody line. Your approach leaned more to the “soloing” side in my view.

I felt the production was clean overall. I would have like to hear more from the bass and drums however. This might have added some body to mix and reinforces the groove. I couldn’t really make out what the bass was up to. I like when the bass distinguishes itself from the rhythm guitars, but that is a style choice. Drum tone was a bit synthetic, as others have noted.

I really enjoyed listen and it grew on me further as I listened subsequent times. My suggestions are nit-picks and a matter of opinion.

Cool stuff, Daren

well, i just got a job mixing a 4 song demo for a buddy, so as soon as i'm done with that, i've got a track i'll try slappinng down...
i'll use my little peavey jsx mini colossal to do it, see what happens!
that black face twin sounds sweet!

ziplock-
appreciate the kind words about the bad moon rising cover...
yep, my version is quite a bit different.....
but still keeps the original close in mind.
and hell, if i don't give it away, nobody gets it!!
LOL
i DO sell it, tho, on the Trouble cd.... link at bottom of my post.

Supercreep
thanks for listening!
the squeals at the beginning, is simply me standing very close to the speaker cabinet, at high volume, taking my hands off of all but one string, and letting it feedback...... then dropping the trem bar, and rolling the vol knob down at the same time....

so basically, i'm just controlling a feedback moment.
i had already experimented for a while before tracking this, so i knew which strings were going to just 'take off' on their own, before i started.... and i used a couple of specific instances in the song.

i don't own a whammy pedal....

but i want a wah....... and i'm thinking, AREA 51 drop in.
whadayathink?

ido1957
yep, guitar instrumentals, have been around a long time.
and i love the vai and satch stuff, beck was a huge influence, jeez, i listen to almost everything!

my idea, is to play aggressively, avoid any licks that sound like something else i've already heard, and play purely from the heart.
and try to be tasty.
and try to end world hunger.
and yada yada blah blah...

:D

thanks for listening!

Greg_L
thanks for the props, man, it really is a song for 'mostly players'.
LOL
even tho, a few of my non musician friends like it, they still gravitate towards the simpler stuff, and the song stuff.

the synth drums.... well, it's really two different kits-
the first kit, the industrial kit, only happens on the intro to the heavy part, right before the trill picking part happens.
then it comes in on the turn arounds.

the rest of the time, it's just a plain ole rock kit.

i think, maybe, a lot of folks hear that industrial kit part, and that gets stuck in their head like an earworm, and then they forget to listen to the rest of what's going on.

granted, it's just a theory, but i'm sticking with it!!
LOL

:p

thanks for listening and commenting daren!

the mp3 forum here is pretty damn cool, eh?!
lots of good stuff floating around, you don't need to buy new music, just get it here!
LOL
(they send me a certificate for a Wendy's hamburger for saying that)
;)

you've got great ideas about how the song could be edited...

and yeah, i've never used those drum patches again! LOL
they did the job, which was really a down and dirty rhythm track to suit the mood..

i WOULD like to remix this:
i have a technical problem with it tho, the original recording was done with a roland vS880EX, and the backup files for it are in a proprietary roland format, which is not a wav file.
bummer.
i bounced it into sonar (my current daw) to simply master it...

yes, this particular instrumental, is designed to serve up the flesh, raw and wriggling.
make no bones about it, it was for the thrash aspect more than anything else.

i've got reams of instrumentals with well thought out melodies, and harmonies, and all that....
but i wanted THIS one, to be a go-for-it kind of thing.
gotta have one of those, every once in a while..........

..........

I think you're right. I didn't even notice the drums go "real". Sorry man. I was more listening to the guitar work. Good stuff. :)

:D
that's my story, and i'm stickin' with it!
LOL

thanks man......

does anyone know...

what kind of program it would take....
to put a tempo map across the top of the drum machine, and then be able to apply new drum samples to it?

a trick i always use on programmed drums like this, was to manually ride the 'meter' knob....

i would manually speed up certain sections, slow them down in other places, to give a more 'human touch' to the meter....

so, it'd be tricky to do a tempo map?

i don't know about these things.....
