Hey guys, besides for mics what use is their for xlr input output, what other use then for mics would xlr be used for.

XLR's can and are used for any balanced connection. Mic inputs and outputs, line inputs and outputs, even power for lights in some video applications...

Don't ever confuse the connector with the signal it is carrying.

Preamps, compressors, limiters, most rack gear can be connected to consoles via XLR cables, my speakers use XLR cables as well.

It's fairly common to find XLR jacks as the line out on an amp. I have an acoustic/electric guitar with both 1/4 and XLR jacks.

Low powered speakers
Working lights on sound consoles

To be honest, any signal that requires 3 pins. As someone said previously, you can send anything you want down it (within reason). The connector doesnt make any difference.

Lets see, awards for most ingenious use of XLR...

DMX also - Not the normal 5-pin, but when you're linking a bunch of addressed light fixtures or scrollers...

Let's not forget Jon O. over at Niant that actually turns XLR connectors INTO microphones! :)

Brilliant! Never seen that. I always thought something like a Beta98 was tiny enough to be used in a clever way - and still be 'ok' sounding. Someones obviously done it. Are they any good?

Yeah, they are perfectly good, quality mics. There's quite a few people on the BBS that have some of his stuff. And I see now that Jon is not just sitting on his butt out there in paradise, but keeps coming out with new stuff, too.

Check out his mics at http://www.naiant.com/studiostore/microphones.html, and also many other clever little accessories he has there if you browse around his site a bit.
