Just wondering the AKG C451b mic seems to have appeared here in the uk again, would one work o.k on its own on acoustic guitar, or do you need a pair?

Just another question.
With a single small dia mic, where would you suggest positioning it for a start neck side or bridge side or somewhere in between, i know there's no hard and fast rules.
Thanks Again

Try it at 6" (to 12") out, twelfth fret, pointing almost (not quite) at the soundhole

I just got a 451B a few weeks ago. I a/b'd it with an SM81 at GuitarCenter (before I bought it on ebay), and really was surprised at how much clearer the 451 was -- no contest (it could have been a bad SM81, though). I really went in to buy the SM81. BUT, just to compare, I brought in my MXL603S, and could hardly tell the difference between that and the 451B. So why did I buy the 451B? I really don't f***'n know why!

But, anyway, what the guys above said about one being good enough, where to place it, blah, blah, blah, is something I agree with. However, if you're mixing in the acoustic with a bass, I would position the mike at the 12th fret (or where the neck meets the body), and point it more towards the nut and away from the hole to avoid any bassyness that would conflict with the bass guitar. Just put your headphones on and try a variety of positions.

I've got one (only) 451 (and 2 MXL603s & 2 Rode NT5s). I can tell the difference.

I use it about 12 inches out from the 12th fret pointing at the neck/body join. I then use something else somewhere else as well (not always a SDC either), depending upon what else I want to feed in and what overall sound I want to achieve, but the 451 is always up front.

Cheers

I have a set of 451's on demo and I have to say that I'm probably not going to purchase them. They sound great, but so does the NT5, MXL603 and the C4. The differences between them all are very slight to my ears and I'm considering using the money elsewhere. I already own the MXL603s, and will probably add the C4 to get the omni capsule.

I do find that the AKG is a little tighter on the low notes of the acoustic guitar, which I like. Also the AKG has spearately selectable options for high pass and pad, unlike the C4, which is "one or the other". But my pre already offers these options...

On the other hand, my brother has put out several jazz CDs and he swears by his pair of 451's on his acoustic classical guitars.
