Will my AT4033 make a decent Kick Mic?

I am thinking of getting a better kick mic, and getting rid of the crappy apex thing I have.....

Will My AT 4033 work for this, or do I need to buy a dedicated "kick mic"...

I wouldn't just use it inside the kick alone like a traditional dynamic kick mic (I have, I just didn't like it) but out in front of the kick 2-3' along with a dynamic inside the kick is the real deal. The dynamic inside gets the "click" of the beater attack and the 4033 catchs the body and "thud" of the kick.

But, im not sure if that will work, with all the bleed... Maybe I might be better off looking at a better dedicated kick mic...

Whats a decent budget one that will blow away this Apex thing?

There, I probably won't be a lot of help. I've tried the ATM-25 side by side with D-112's and at the time I prefered the D-112 but there's a ton of folks here that know what they're doing that swear by the AT's. I'll say that I personally don't have a problem with the bleed but you can always cobble together a tent out over the front of the kick with mic stands and a moving blanket for isolation if it becomes a problem. Did you by chance listen to the ruff mix of Victim I have up on NoWhereRadio? It's not a 4033 but a GT AM-52 but a condensor none the less and a D-112 inside.

Ive never heard that Apex on a kick before, but i know this.....

for bang for the buck on a kick drum, the AT ATMPRO25 WILL NOT be beat......

have you tried a sm57/4033 in the combination TrackRat described?....that can be quite perty too......

and we are talking for recording and not live , right?....

you already own the 4033.... you own the kick drum... Out of curiosity, what did you think? I think a 57/4033 combo would work great... Personally, I'd spring for a RE20, as you could use it for some other stuff too (Voxvendor radio broadcasts ) The EV mic isn't all that terribly expensive, as I am sure you know. The dang shockmount is a 100 smackers though....but I don't figure you'll really need that.

just remembered one other option... You could layer 100 tracks of kick drum... that might get a nice full and "airy" sound

I'm not following the question Mixmkr... I knew it could be used for a kick, but was wondering how it faired against the dedicated bass/kick mics, like the D112 etc...

The combo does sound interesting and I plan to try it out.... (57/4033)....

speaking of the ole queen/voxvendor/def lepord trick...

I've been trying that out lately and it really rocks. I think it might work even better since I can't sing in tune very well. Blends much better than if I had a mere 4 or 5 tracks of bg vocals.

as stated earlier...the ev re20 will SMOKE any other setup you try, for the type I music I believe you are interested in. otherwise, just slam a 57 in there.
