I notice condensor mic like the C1 has foam windscreen included in the package. I have never bothered about them, and always thought they are unnessecary as long as you have a pop filter.

I notice an article in the recent SOS and a lady producer that seemed to record her vocals with a NT2 with both pop filter and windscreen on it! and Paul White actually praises her vocal tracks.

so, my question is, are there situation where the windscreen would come in handy? I already have a pop filter.

If you're micing a kickdrum, or perhaps a narration that goes something like: "Paul, the paultry pied piper pulled a pistol on Peter, the plywood-piling pirate."

I'll Probably Get Ribbed For This, But...

Live work where a condencer for vocals is used?.....Much better visually to use the screen than a filter...

when we recorded some vocal tracks with our C-1 the singer was feeling like the s sounds were to pronounced, so
we put on the cover moved him a little closer....and it was much improved, just
a thought of why we use it.......bostonfan2

Leeking, the NT2 is a *very* bright mic, so they probably used the windscreen to tame the high end. Usually windscreens really are only good for what the name indicates: getting rid of wind noise when used outside. Chessrock's suggestion to put it on when putting the mic into a kick drum to protect the capsule is another good use, of course. But I find windscreens not particularly helpful to get rid of pop noises. Put a windscreen on a SP B1, or any particullarly "poppy" LD, and you'll find that it's not nearly as effective as a dedicated pop screen.

It's handy to have a windscreen when recording outdoors.

I thought they were to protect your teeth from the wire mesh roll bars?

Silly me:p

I call them slobber stoppers! How my kids get into the studio is still a mystery:confused:

Leeking,

That would be the uh, wind screen. It comes in handy when the mic is exposed to wind...
Am I missing something here?

I have a pretty stiff breeze blowing through MY basement studio...wait...OK, it's all better now-I shut the window.:D :D :D

Leeking, it is called "wind screen" 'cause it's good in wind. Heavy winds in outside remote locations can destroy a condenser mic's capsule. Do not blow into this thing to clean off dust. I've seen a 40 mph gust do a ribbon mic. A word to the wise-Richie

You better have one when you are outside, useing it with your movie camera. Not all of us just use thier homwrecing stuff for music you know.

Oh, I was hoping that it has some magical powers to get rid of noise in a noisy home studio as well. :(

For that you need a foam windscreen that fits over your entire studio.

Brent Cassidy, I mean Sean Casey, I mean Casey Kasem, no wait-

Wait, no, I think it's a lip insulator for guitar players with ground faults.

Cars have airbags and seatbelts - mics have foam covers and clips:confused: I always thought it was a safety feature
