I have a young bass student and his dad wants to get him something that will let him record himself playing. Nothing fancy, just a few different tracks with bass and guitar.

I took a look at their computer and it seems kind of old. I'm wondering if a USB interface + Cubase setup like mine would run too slow. How fast of a computer should he have to go with a DAW and interface? Would a stand-alone unit be a better choice?

I think stand alone would be a good choice. Maybe something like the Zoom H4.

Well, unless he's really serious about the instrument, a standard 3 piece ought to do it.

Oh not that kind of recorder you say?!?

:D

How old is his computer? It doesn't have to be that up to date to run a USB interface. There was a thread a week or two ago about how long recording computers last, and a good portion of the people there were still using desktops from 5-10 years ago.

H4n Handy Recorder

I have an H4n and while your choice is a good one the buyer should be aware that plugging a guitar especially a bass directly into its TRS sockets will overload it. This is a contentious issue as the Zoom manual shows a guitar.
