It depends on what it is. A square wave on a synth, -18dbfs. A snare drum -4dbfs. An electric guitar, -12dbfs.

All of the signals are running at about 0dbVU which is (on my system) about -18dbfs

0dBVU (also -18 on my recording converters) as a general rule for the "steadier" instruments (guitars, bass, vocals) a whisker higher for transients (maybe peaks around -12dBFS or so) and considerably lower on the usual suspects - Hand percussion, overheads, synth pads, etc.

What John said.

Working at 24 bit, I tend not to worry over-much about it. I work with acoustic instruments only and the dynamic range is, well, it's certainly got one...

Cheers

yeah cool .. all of my recordings ive had peaking at like 3,2,1,0

im retarded :o

that will be a change to have some headroom

I dont pay attention to my VUs' they tend to take away from creativity.

I'm actually tempted to use that as a signature file...
