I am recording with a Roland VS-2480CD. I have been using a Shure Sm-57 on snare, a Shure Beta 52 for kick, and two AKG C-1000's for overheads with good results. I would like to start micing each tom on a set... what's a good microphone for micing toms? I was thinking about Shure 56's, Shure 57's, or Seinhesier 421s. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for responses.

Sennheiser MD-421's are my favorite. If you don't want to buy a truckload of the 421's at this point, get at least one for the floor tom and use SM-57's on the rack toms.

Maybe get something else for overheads (Octava MC-012's or MXL-602's) and use the C-1000's as tom mics. Just my opinion but I think they sound MUCH better there than as overheads. If you're curious about how they'd sound, click on the www button at the bottom of my post and check out "Victim". That's C-1000's on rack toms and a C-3000 on the floor tom.

Sennheiser e604's are my personal favourite and are very well used in most of Britain.

I heard a rumour that Radio Shack do a very close rip-off for less than a quarter of the price, so might be worth thinking of.

I agree with kid. I had all 57's for toms until I bought 4 Sennheiser MD421 MKII's. What a difference right off the bat. They're great on toms.

I had several of the Radio Shack mics, as well as I STILL have several 504's and 609's... the radio shack mics are quite veiled sounding compared... no where near as nice.
