I enjoyed the other thread on how many mics do you have. I thought it might be helpful to also list what you are using these mics for. I own:

Neumann U87 - Vocals, Acoustic guitars
AKG 3000B - Vocals, Acoustic guitars
Audix OM-6 - Micing guitar amps

I tend to use LDC for things like vocals... SDC for things like acoustic instruments and etc... and dynamic mic's for things like drums and etc... of course there are always exceptions.

Some of the mics I own I listed in this thread http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=124244 I also own many other mics like... AKG C1000S, AKG D112, Audio-technical ATM25, MXLV67G, MXL603SPR, Oktava MC-319, Oktava MC-012, Rode NT1, Rode NT2, Rode NT3, Rode NT5, JoeMeek JM27, Behringer B5 and more... plus I've own and sold a lot of mics that I either didn't like or use... like some of the Studio Projects, Shure, and Marshall mics, and etc, etc.

ill bite on this one.

Ill also post mics that ive owned for long periods of time but dont own anymore. Mics with a * by them are ones i currently own (or still have access too).

Neumann U87 P48 - Sometimes vocals, although i actually dont like these much on vocals. Drum Overheads. Horns.

* Neumann TLM193 - I use this on bright voices, and screamers. This is a dark microphone that i love to use.

* Neumann KM194 - Acoustic guitar (when i need it bright). Vocal/Choir Overheads. Airy Drum overheads.

Soundelux U95 - Was my main vocal mic for a while. Wish i still had it :(. Maybe ill get it back when i can afford it.

* Audio Technica AT4050 - Versatile vocal microphone. Sometimes use for drum overheads.

* Audio Technica AT4030 - Unique sound for Acoustic guitar.

* AKG C414 EB - Main Drum Overheads. Thick Acoustic guitar. Vocals at times.

* AKG D112 - Bass drum. Dont like it too much.

AKG D 224 E - Dynamic mic that works where the KM84 does. Hi Hat.

* Royer R-122 - Guitar Amp and horns. Also works well on loud screaming vocals. Pretty much works on everything that needs to be warm.

* Studio Projects C1 - When i want bright vocals. I dont use these very often any more.

* Studio Projects B3 - Versatile mic. Dont use as much because i have the 414s and 4050s. There just in case ;).

* MXL 67 - Darker than the C1, but still kind of harsh on vocals. Dont use this as much now that i have the Neumann TLM193.

* MXL 603s - Close mic'd Acoustic Guitar, Hi hat, Orchestra Overheads at times.

* Sennheiser MD421 - Toms, Kick, Snare, Guitar Amp, Bass Amp, Horns, Vocals. Love these things, wish i had more.

* Sennheiser E602 - Love his mic for kick. Recently used it on Floor Tom with good results.

* Sennheiser E604 - Toms, sometimes guitar amps.

* EV RE20 - Bass Drum, Bass Amp. Dont use this for anything else really.

* EV 660 - I just acquired these, seem like they would be good for toms.

* Shure SM57 - Its an SM57.

* Behringer ECM8000 - Never use these except for room measurements.

I used to have alot of vintage EVs and Shures and a bunch of Audio Technica Condensors, but i never really used them much. These are mics that i would actually use :D. Really wish i still had the Soundelux U95.

I only record solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar. The mics I have are:

pair Schoeps CMC6/MK4 - (XY, ORTF, NOS, spaced pair)

Along with the Schoeps, I use a third mic, for a center channel from one of the following:

Neumann M149
Microtech Gefell UMT800
CAD VX2

I've chosed these mics after several years of searching, having tried or owned many other mics. These work best for me.

I currently have a pair of Microtech Gefell M294s on loan from a friend, nickle diaphragm small condensers. Very, very nice. Looks like I'll be getting a pair to complement the Schoeps, although I believe I'll be getting the M295s instead (flater response than the 294s). I also would like to get a pair of Schoeps MK41 capsules some day.

Which LD mic I use often depends on which guitar I'm recording (sometimes the tune being recorded is as factor). Although all my guitars are mid sized (OM, GA sizes), there's a big difference between them because most are from different makers and each has a different wood combination. Add different types of strings and there's quite a variety of instrument tone to work with. So, for example, the M149, with its utter smoothness and clarity works well with the mahogany/adirondack spruce OM, a classic "Martinesque" sound. The VX2 (using the 1.25 Optima capsule), with its full color and rather flat response, works well with the koa/cedar guitar, particularly with altered tunings. The UMT800 is the most versatile, doing well with just about anything, but particularly with the rosewood/alpine spruce guitar.

The Schoeps, well, they're Schoeps. They sound great on anything I try. Placement is critical though. Recently, I've been favoring ORTF and I've always enjoyed the spaced pair (12th fret, lower bout) placement.

Audix D6 - Kick
Behringer ECM8000 - Overheads, Tamborine, Snare (pointed at the shell)
Sennheiser e609 Silver - Guitar Amps, Lo-Fi Vocals
Peavey PV - Tom, Talkback
Radio Shack 33-3032 - Tom

i do only chamber music. i have been through three pairs of neumann km184s, royer r-121s, tlm103s, rode NTKs, gefell m300s, schoeps cmc64s, and a slew of others.

i currently am using pairs of DPA 4011s, AKG C480/ck61s, AT4051s (where i need something a little brighter), and modified DPA 4061s (ambience). i have 8 channels of Millennia Media HV3 preamps and record to a roland VS1880. i tend to use close spaced pairs for solo instruments in the studio, and variations on NOS in live venues. the 4011s and the c480/ck61's are very flat, quite similar in response, and literally can be used on anything with superb results. the schoeps are also nice mics, though i found the mk4 caps too boomy, and would have prefered the mk41s. same kind of incredible build quality as the DPAs.

i have a gig coming up at the end of july to do a piano/flute CD where the piano is a new 7'4" bosendorfer (it has 92 keys) - in the pianist's smallish living room (ouch!). bruce myers of DPA is going to do a PR piece about it. i'll use the 4011s as a spaced pair on the paino about 3-4 feet apart and just outside the lid, with spaced C481s on the flute (4 feet out, 3 ft separation), and the little 4061s out in the room, with portable acoustic materials to balance out the room some. should be challenging but fun.
