do you have a preamp already? If so,

I have heard good things about

Audio technica 4033=$300
Audio technica 4050=$480
Neumann TLM 103= $680 (a bit over your budget)
Rode NTK= $500
Studio Project C3= $350
Studio project T3=$600

IF you don't have a preamp, you probably wanna spend at least 1-$200 on one.

just my 2 cents

good luck

Please forgive my ignorance on this subject, but do you think a mic that is good for spoken word would also be good for rap?

I'm sure you can see my reasoning on this one. If that's the case, my guess would be something like the Electrovoice RE20 or the Shure SM7. In the budget category, I really happen to like the sound of the Marshall mxl v67 on voiceovers and the like.

Just a thought.

Yes, Chessrock. I think so. The RE20 or SM7 would be great choices for rap vox. Hell, the SM57 with the right mic pre could be a great choice for the right rapper.

Does anyone make a mic that makes rap sound good????? :)

I think the man is looking for suggestions here . . . not miracles. :D

you might look at the oktava mk319. try out a bunch as their quality control sucks. guitar center has these for $99 right now. i repeat: try a bunch and pick the one that sound best to your voice.

i'd avoid the rode ntk, nt1000 or the neumann tlm103. i think these are too clean.

i think the studio projects b3 could work for rap.

you might try a shure beta 58.

otherwise, you might try the studio projects c1 or c3 and the rode nt2. if you are going for more of an old style r&b sound then you might try the audio technica at3035. if you can shop around and want the real old style r&b sound, then look for a used rode classic. you should be able to find one for around $725 or so.

Hey P-Loc. I replied to your thread a while back in Computer Recording and said get BOTH an SM7 and a C1 and gave you links to both of them. This thread just re-affirms that idea.

Basically what people are telling you is to get a good Dynamic and a good Large Diaphram Condensor with a cardoid pattern. Between these two you will be covered.

Good dynamic mics:

ElectroVoice RE20
Shure SM7, 57, 58, beta 57, beta 58
Sennhieser 421 mkII
Sennhieser 441U or mkII
(there are many others but these are some of what I think are most recommended around here)

Good LD condensors (there are a lot so I'll not list all)

Audio Technica - 4033, 4040, 4050, 4060
Shure KSM - 27, 32, 44
StudioProjects - B1, B3, C1, C3, T3
MXL - V67, 2003/V93, V77
AKG - C4000, SolidTube, 414b
Rode - NT1000, NTK
Neumann - TLM 103
(and many many many more)

Good luck on your search
