Less is More.
I'm a graphic designer, so I'll chip in my $.02 worth.
A person needs to be able to look at your flyer for two seconds and get it. That's the bottom line.
Make it easy to read. Make it interesting to look at. Don't fill it up with text - especially useless things like influences and experience. Instead, give the reader the main idea with the fewest words possible, and then give them a way to learn more if they want: your website! (you do have a website, don't you?)
The biggest words should be your band name (or logo), the place, and the date. Everything else should be smaller. And don't use some stupid weird font. Make it EASY to read.
A person should be able to ride by the local telephone poll on their bike, or on the bus, and see your flyer pinned on it and get it.
Of course, all those cool, psychadelic hand-bills from the '60's are the exact opposite of everything I just said, so what the heck.
