Come on i know its bad, but it aint so bad that no one has a word to say about it.

Hello. I don't think it sucks, but that's only because the performances are so strong. It sounds kinda' like a live band practice recorded with a jambox, and I'm really sorry if that sounds harsh, but that's my honest opinion. I think it could be spectacular if you spent some time listening to reference material along-side your mix while you're mixing. I mean, there's like, no bass, the guitars sound like they're plugged straight into a soundcard, until the distortion kicks in, at which point they just sound like a fuzzy blur with no meat or definition.

Hats off for recording real drums, but they sound like you just put a mic about 3 feet in front of the whole kit and let it run.

The singer is strong, and from what I can tell, the guits are played well...that kinda' saves the recording from the brink of death, lol. :D :D - I know I sound like a dick, and it's mostly because I just am one.

What is wrong?

Everything sounds thin and buzzy.

Guitars too loud, drowning everything else out. Lemme guess, a guitarist mixed this right?

Drums are a million miles away. Sounds like tin pots and cardboard boxes being lightly tapped.

Bass... I didn't hear any.

This isn't just a mix issue, although the mix is wretched; I guarantee that the instruments were very poorly recorded.

In the future please refrain from producing and recording yourself. Go to a studio and get a professional to help you. I suspect the band may not be half bad, but it is VERY hard to tell one way or the other due to the ultra bad recording quality.

compression is not the enemy! don't abuse it. I've thrown popcorn on a fire with better results. Sorry my fellow glaswegian but that is ass on a plate. I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and put some of it down to bad MP3 encoding. Sounds like the practice pad in Maryhill

I didnt use that much compression i dont think. Anyway, i have a peavey bass amp (sucks) and cant get a decent sound atall.
Any tips would be welcome.
I think the snare is either gated too much (had a ringy snare!) or compressed at too high a ratio.
Oh well, back to the drawing board eh!
I love my work gettin slated.

Yeah, here's a tip...record the bass DI'd right from the output of the bass. Seriously, it would sound better.

I've gotten good sounds out of crappy Peavey amps... of course, I used a DI signal with it. I was actually surprised.

I did DI the bas straight from the PEAVEY amp!! Theres just no tone or punch there atall.

Nonononono....

You split the signal... run one to the amp, the other to your DI/mixer. Mic the amp... now mix the mic'd amp signal (with eq usually) and the DI signal (with eq usually) together.

:)

or...if you can't get a decent sound out of the amp with the good bass, run out of the bass and screw the amp...who cares, it's low end, lol.

Hate to say it but:

I'm thinking your issues may be more with recording and mixing skills then....

There's no reason why some bass shouldn't have gotten through, unless your trying to have "And Justice For All" like low end.

I just didnt want that much bass as i thought it sounded nasty. I love loads of bass in my mixes but when i have a bad bass recording there aint much else i can do.
I will post my mastered mix in a bit when the server isnt as slow.

I have tried DI with the bass but have got better results with the bass with an sm57 on the amp. Tell me what you think of the bass sounds on the songs called bad bones jam and from the top. www.soundclick.com/patlang12

Sorry man. I dont like the bass atall. Maybe cause i canny really hear it that much. Maybe not beacuse of the mix, but because the mic sounds pretty far away from source. Its live isnt it? Sounds like spill from other sources.
I might give the sm57 a try out as i am always up for trying new things. I usually use a D112 and DI. But i just need a decent amp for recording so i can crank the volume of the bass track up at mix down.
