Well...?

All I did was a cover to learn on my new equipment. Sounds awesome. Better than any solo piano CD in my collection.

Got another console coming on Thursday, maybe Friday, but at least I have the deck down pat.

Very cool! New toys rule. Of course I recorded my new toy, a new Taylor (did I mention I got a new Taylor). I did a cover of Find The Cost Of Freedom (C,S&N) to try it out. Very nice and surprising. An Earthworks SR-71 sounds better on this Taylor than a Neumann KM-184. Go figure.
Also tracked an original tune with a new group a friends I'm writing with. Very, very cool.

Hehe

I recorded Magic by America....cool tune to play around with
when I can't think of any new songs to write.

No, you didn't mention you had a new Taylor. Those are nice guitars. I've played a few myself, but could never justify the cost because of my ability. I know the rush of getting new gear. I live for it. Congrats. :)

I get by on a Seagull S6+. Pretty nice guitar for the money actually. When I "aquired" it I'd never heard of them before. I actually traded it for a seldom used aviation handheld Nav-Com at the music store I used to work at. Maybe you've heard of it; B&G Music in Belleville. A guy named Ken owns it. He flys too, and I was in the right place at the right time for the Nav-Com trade.

I'd like to capture that Taylor on tape though an MD-441U sometime. I'd bet it would blow away any digital recording short of an MCI or Sony digital 24 or 32 track.

I'd like to hear that challenge. My money would be on a decent didtal system. Hmmmm.....

Track Rat ,congradulations on the new guit!
This weekend..Friday I did basics{pre production} for a group doin' a CD{kinda like Melloncamp with female vox}cool stuff and great players..And he had a Taylor :)...It was easy!Saturday some more with them..some keys and vox...Sunday work on my and cowriters own album...Busy weekend..I love it!

Track, did you start out in analog? I'm just curious.

I just don't think that digital can capture the warmth of a guitar or piano like analog can.

I'm open-minded, and don't personally have anything against those who chose digital though I will never record digitally.

Sometimes it's a bitch to set in your ways. That's what happens when you get older. At least to me.

Yeah, analog to start on. Sony reel to reel, graduated to a Teac 3340 (I still have an A-7010), to a Tascam 238. There to digital. These just the machines I've owned. I've also worked with Fostex B thru E16's quite a lot. No real 2" hands on.

let's see...I recorded (mentally, in my brain) the sound of pounding in roofing nails as I sided my house all weekend. ...Lemonade and BBS breaks to cool down.

Zero,zilch,nada.

My son was here this weekend. He's 2. He's not a very good drummer.

Yet.;)

OK, you've worked with both formats. Time to ante-up. Do you really prefer the sound of digital over analog, or is it because of the editing capabilities? Straight answer.

The editing possibilities of digital are enourmous and I realize that it is a major benefit of this format. It's a real bitch to edit analog tape.

God how I would love to combine seven tracks of analog to one track with no generation loss, but we both know that ain't happenin' any time ever. I live with it and try to get it right the first time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that digital is a crutch for anyone, it's just that those of us (as you know so well from experience) who work in analog have got to try their best get it right the first time because there may not be a second chance.

PM me if you like.

Straight up, I prefere digital sound (which is no sound imparted at all). This is just my humble opinion but unless you have a two inch machine or something like a one inch 4 track you're probably not getting the bennifit of tape "sound", just the tape hiss. I'm just not having a problem at all getting things to sound the way I want them to with ADATs (type II) or especially on the HD24. What I hear through the monitors is exactly what ends up recorded, so if I think it sounds good, it IS good. I really think the secret is to have as big a selection of mics and pre's as practical so you CAN dial in the sound you're looking for. Guitar sounds nasty? Move the mic around. Still nasty? Change the mic or the pre amp. Just my humble opinion. YMMV.

Last night I took the recording of the band Im in that we made on friday night.... and Compressed it and eq'ed it and limited it in Pro Tools...

At thursday nights practice...
We basically threw up a few mics and then ran them right through a Behringer mixer.... (one of them tiny ones, not sure of the model #) and then the outs of the Behringer directly to the cd burner....

How do ya like that for a hi tech set up... :D

Actually it worked ok.... But we had to burn a track of us playing and then listen to it on the burner, and make any neccesary adjustments......

We are in the early stages of rehearsal and we are recording everything to document our improvement and shed some light on areas that need work..

Cool eh?

So that was my taste of recording in the past week....

Yeah very true...

IMO, The warmth that analog displays is added, and not actually in your original (pre-recording) sound.... Sort of innacurate in a way...

Digital, you get EXACTLY what you put in....

Im not really a fan of "warmth"...I like accuracy much, much more.

I finished my second album, which is called "Stupidity". Technically, I finished it on Friday, I guess. On Saturday I finished some guitars and vocals for a punk band I've been recording.

I laid down the first piano tracks for a song called A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square". I "classicalized" the chords progression though, by playing some of the chords by using what's known as an octave + 1/3 technique. This technique requires you to "roll" into the chord kind of like an extended arrpeggio, and 7th's 9th's and 11th's can span several octaves. (Very sweet sound, when done right.) I only managed to get the first verse done.

I recorded a thunderstorm with 2 ECM8000s. Spliced it into a song but it didn't sound too good. The storm by itself sounds great though. Amazing what rain drops sound like at different frequencies. ( sweeping the mids )
