What can I add to this?

Nice that somebody's takin' over Rush's slot...they're gettin' old and suckin' wind in concert these days, I hear. I think it's time to quit when you gotta three-months' supply of Depenz on the bus.....

I love the recording...nice playing...good arrangement. Goin' on!

But the sound of the vocal doesn't cut and zoom like the band. I'd have to listen to some Rush tunes to pin down why not. The only other weakness is the vox melody falls down when it should be peaking, in a couple spots....some other note choices...more certain and powerful.....it makes the diff between a radio-player and an album-filler, in this case, I think.

Wish I could say why the vocal doesn't do it for me. The singing is real good. Something.....errrrggggh!

Super job. Nice to hear that Strat-bite again. I miss it.

No...I wouldn't add nothin'. Sounds complete. Experiment with the vocal...kick it up...yeah.

Yeah I see what your saying. Wondering about adding some harmonies in the chorus and other weak areas to distract?

I'll try muddling aroud with a few different melodies and see what I can figure out

Sounds great, man!
You've already got some nice harmonies there though. I thought thw voice was very good. Very nice performance and recording. Mix sounds fine to me, well done!

Good intro - the band pumps along.
The vox don't sound quite there to me - could be a little nasal or thin? the rest, including harmonies, is spot on.
Goodie good good.

Re: Mix in modified room
Ok I did a few things here.

I redid the vox with my Rode NTK mic. I think I need to bring them up a tad in this mix, but take a listen. Re-amped the drums to get more room sound, maybe a little too much HH's now? The mix is quite a bit brighter on this one and I'm not sure if I went to far. I'm having a hard time getting used to the room right now.

Seems like I'm having a couple of issues with this mix

1) What to make "big" . Seems like when I make the guitars big, the drums loose impact and it sounds like guitar overundulgence. If I make the drums "big" they sound fake big because I'm trying to simulate a big room. Also I have a pretty tight snare on this, maybe I should of went fatter at the source. So do I re-record the drums in a bigger space, (or re-amp them in a bigger space) or do I make the guitars big, or do I go for a happy medium?

I'm also having a hard time as far as mastering on this one there are so many spaces, then places with no spaces, it's hard to know what to set as far as limiting and compression.

Anyways any input would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know which version I listened to. I just clicked on the link in your first post. All I can say is that this is AWESOME! It really sounds great. I can't find anythnig I would change.

Here's some more kick, less 10kish on the oh's and more 2-3k on them. Also more bass. I automated the snare track, might have went a little "over the top" on the track, but it's so hard to get it to stand out from the guitars

Thanks for helping out!!!

Even on a laptop, this does sound pretty "big". The snare seems super prominent, but could be just right on other setups...the kick comes through fine even on these tiny speakers. Guitars sound good and vocals are well captured. You've done a really nice job with this :D.

Sounds as good as it did the first time, SOM!
That's a great drum sound you've got there. Nice vocal harmonies. A great track!

Yeah, sounds pretty sweet to me. I definitely agree with Jeff's Rush comparison, that's the first thing I thought of as well. Technically proficient yet still very accessible. Thumbs up.

For my bass player/drummer sensbilities, I could stand a little more kick and a little more 80Hz in the bass. ("guitar indulgence" :) ) Beyond that, I think you really stuck the landing on this. Intricate, nuanced guitar work, superbly solid drumming. I think your' fretting about things that you have right for the most part. Trust your instincts, they appear to be largely on the money.

Ok I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I think this is my final mix, added back up vox, some reverse echo and tremolo gimmics onto it, I also went au natrual on the snare, I've decided that the snare wasn't the right one for the tune so it would have to be retracked to sound any better so I left it up for the drummer. Thanks for listening!

I love the bass definition - what bass, what amp, what EQing please?
The

I used a Fender Jazz Bass, one channel di'd, the other channel with a peavey mark4 bass amp and a rode ntk mic. Mild eq and compression to taste :)
