From what I read, you'll be pretty happy with either. I just got a Delta 66 (I figured the addition of S/PDIF i/o was worth the small difference in price on the off chance that my next magic box has digital i/o too... or maybe I might want to borrow or rent a DAT someday and do some field recording, then get it onto the PC without another D-to-A and A-to-D) and I recommend the M Audio stuff. Good support, good driver development. I've also heard nothing but praise for Gadget Labs. One difference (maybe minor depending on what software you're going to use with it) is that the Delta series have DirectSound drivers while the Gadget cards, I believe, do not.

I just ordered my Delta 66 today as well, because of the possibility that I might "need" that spdif connection one day.

I think the big difference between the Delta44 and the Wave496 is drivers and price. The cheapest I've found the Delta44 is $270 at www.midi-classics.com (the Delta66 is only $30 more at www.bayviewproaudio.com) and you can't bargain shop for the Gadgetlabs stuff cause they're the only ones that sell 'em. The Delta cards also have ASIO2, Win2k, GSIF, and EASI drivers whereas the Gadgetlabs cards only have ASIO2 and saying that the others are on the way (whenever that'll be). Also, the midi-classics site has the Delta/Sonic Foundry bundle (Delta44, Vegas Pro, XFX1, and Siren) for $400. Another thing is that the Wave496 isn't even available yet. Neither have midi connections but midiman makes several midi interfaces.

Actually, the 496 does have a MIDI interface. But it's only a single in and out, and for the different in price with the Delta44 you could probably get a decent MIDI interface (like Midiman's MidiSport 2x2 USB interface).

Before I got my Delta44, I talked to various reviewers who had reviewed both M-Audio cards (mainly the Delta66 or 1010) and the GadgetLabs cards. Although on paper the GadgetLabs cards look better (the 824 and 496 at least), the response I got from all the reviewers I talked to was that they felt the Delta cards just pipped out the GadgetLabs cards on sound (I doubt *I* could tell the difference), and very definitely superior driver support with the Delta cards (the final selling point for me, apart from price).

thanx for reminding me that it actually does have a midi interface
