I've been using a Bheringer B2 for my vocals, and while it has been an improvement over the SM58beta, I know I can do better. I have a pair of VTB-1 pre's coming (once MF finally gets them in stock) and I've also got Oktava MC012's being replaced by MF.

Sooo...I'm wondering what mic I should step up to for vocals. My voice is somewhat low-mid. What mics for < $500 should I be looking at? SP C series? AT4xxx series? Save and get the 4060? Or part with the 350 clams for the LOMO head for the MC012's? Also, which ones might perform well with VTB-1 in particular?

Have fun...

THanks Gidge....ya I gotta check out the Marshall stuff too....

I have an AT 4033SE & SP C-1. They're both great mics. I prefer the 4033 on MY voice, but the C-1 is fabulous on "low" vocal parts.

You could hardly go wrong with either one of those mics.

I've noticed the C1 sounds particulary flattering on some lower / low-mid voices.

Not C1.... C3! Multipattern, simply worth the money for the versatility. It has flat-out trashed every other $500 or less option I've tried on my voice. That, however, is just my voice. I like it a lot for clean vocals. For gritty, I prefer NTK-Richie
