Guitar User.
i am looking at recording a violin in the studio very sooon
and i was wondering what you guys think for a mic placement and
should i use a L/D mic or S/D or if i should use stereo mics on it let me know
thanks.

I've gotten really good results with a reference-type microphone a few feet back. I'll use an Audix TR-40, usually. This might be one of the few instances where the Behringer ECM-8000 might not be a bad option for the price -- if you can deal with the self-noise.

Ribbon mics can be pretty ideal if you have one or have access to one. On a budget, a darker condenser like an Oktava MK319 can work pretty well.

If you don't have a ribbon, I would suggest a dynamic. Try even an SM57. If your only option is a LDC or SDC, put it over the shoulder.

One important detail: what kind of music? what kind of sound do you want? I'd never record classical violin with a ribbon, and I don't think I'd record bluegrass without one.

In many ways the space you put the violin will be more important than the mic. I like the SM57 suggestions just because its so rock and roll, but I personally like LDC mics for violin. Do not close mic. Keep the mic at least 3 feet away, and above the soundboard unless you are going for a really agressive sound.

The nasty high end of a lot of cheap chinese mics like Rodes and CADs can make a violin ugly really quick.

i am recording a little bit of every thing with the Violin
any thing from mountian fiddle ballads to sweet classical
its all just backing tracks for the most part with one track being solo
any way i have a AT4040 and a AKG 777 i think either one of them should work well
just need to find the sweet spot to record with as a placement
