Want to help me pick a new mic?

What I have already:

MC012
SM58

My sound sources:

Cello
Elec. Guitar through Fender Princeton or JC120
Acoustic guitar
Pocket trumpet w/ a lot of hand muting
Baritone horn
Any household items that I may strike or rub against each other
... very rarely, my bass/baritone, somewhat nasal voice

My Budget:

$500 - but I could use another mic pre too...

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the tips guys.

Another mc012 has certainly crossed my mind, but do you think I should go for a proper matched pair, or will another single be close enough for decent stereo?

I just quickly searched on the AT4033 on this forum, and that looks promising. I'll have to try one out sometime.

I have been thinking about a ribbon, or a large dia. dynamic like the MD421, because I have read they sound good on horns and I thought they might smooth out my overly bright plywood cello too. What do you think?

I second and third this option! It's a great mic all around. As I said in another thread.... it to me is like the sm57 of condensor mics.

the 4033

yes!

i keep coming back to it over and over.

and they're cheaper than ever...

Now that you've told us your primary goal, I think a lot of people would want to amend their suggestions, as mellowing out a bright cello would hardly bring to mind either a 4033 or another MC012.

Within your price range, the Beyer ribbons, the Sennheiser 421, the EV RE20, and the SM7 seem like much more likely candidates.

Thanks, littledog, that's the kind of advice I was looking for.

Although I know I'll have to try some to buy one, it helps to narrow down the cosmos of microphones a little.

how about a LOMO head for the MC012?

You'll have plenty of change left over.

What littledog said.- A higher end dymamic will have bizzillions of uses, and it costs less than a high end condenser.-Richie

how 'bout an old EV re15 (off ebay...if you can find it) for 50 bucks or less.... good on horns..eh?

I'll cast my vote for either Beyer M160 or M260. Ribbon mics are great for eliminating the nail-on-blackboard edge that is a frequently a by product of cello close-micing. The Beyer is my favorite on some brass as well.
