Using stereo speakers for composing?

Im not serious into this stuff yet, Im saving up for an easy setup with FruityLoops, CEP and Acid Pro with soundfonts. I dont think Im ready to spend 2K on synths and such, so I was thinking if I bought a Soundblaster Audigy Mp3.. hooked up a pair of new stereo speakers, would that be good enough?

Im still not sure if I can even hook up some $300 speakers into that Audigy MP3 soundcard..
