I've been watching this site for about a month or so now and i haven't seen this question addressed, so i thought i would make it my first question.............

what kind of mic do you guys prefer on the outside of the bass drum..........

i am using an atm25 on the inside and my friend told me to use a condensor on the outside..........i haven't tried it yet, but it seems like it wouldn't be what i want because condesors have a lot of high end......

I also know that if i were to eq the hi-end out, then it should have some bad ass low end in it(depending on the quality of condensor) because most condensors have an awesome frequency responce...

oh and i'm gonna mention that i am using the atm25 mainly for the click and the outside mic is for that nice "fluffy" bass.

I have used a speaker which had awesome low end, but was muddy. (i will probably still use the speaker, but turn it way down in the mix so that it's only there when you listen in a stereo with subs).

the sound i'm going for is kind of like "i'm inside the bass drum." ................2 albums that come to mind are....DEFTONES--white pony........and.........COHEED AND CAMBRIA (an indie band that most of you won't have heard of) i think it was done best on the coheed album, but the deftones also had it.

i'm leaving this question pretty open ended......feel free to talk about brands of mics as well as types of mics..........or anything else that may help (mic placement, etc.).......... oh and if i need to clarify , just let me know.

I've heard the BLUE Baby bottle is pretty awesome in just that role you speak of. Another one I hear talked about is the CAD e100.

If you can afford it, a U87 or U47 wouldn't be bad, either. :D

It seems like alot of people are going with a large condesnser on the oustide. Coheed and cambria have great drum sounds. Another one that sounds really nice in my mind is the old fairweather record. Everything about that production is amazing.

Have you tried eqing the atm25. I'm using an atm pro 25 on the inside of the drum with the front head off, and it never sounds usable until i get it into nuendo and eq it. I will usually boost a range for the click and a range for the boom. I'm looking into getting a new mic myself, but you could try and combination if that's how you're going to go about it. I think just about any budget large condenser will give you a fair amount of boom to mix in.

I'll have to agree on that one. I EQ the daylights out of the kick drum.

I boost just the meat and the click -- usually around 80 hz and 2.3khz -- and cut everything else untill basically all I'm left with is the meat and the click. I let the overheads handle the mids - they do a good job of it. The kick track, to me, is there in a supporting role. That's probably a little backwards from how most people approach it, but it works real well for me.
