this guy will sell me a pair of these monitors for 650.00 for the pair. i can't find any info on them. can someone fill me in on these monitors. will they be good for nearfields? what's the retail price? do they translate well? should i just get the mackie hr824's.

I am not too familiar with those model numbers. But, they are an older speaker that was/is great in their heydays. I think they still are. $650 might be a bit steep.

thanx

that was very helpful, i think i'll pass on those, i'm going to post his sales list in the free ad section for anyone who is interested in his gear. he said he is backing out of the recording buisness due to health reasons. i guess i'll try and save up for those mackies.

The 809's were considered "mid field" monitors. Not quite like the big ol' dual 15's Urei made that many studios still have installed, but for smaller studios, or as the "live room" playback speakers, they were okay.

I have tried to mix on them. Yuck! You REALLY need a tuned control room, and something tuned for those speakers to make them even remotely usable. Frankly, even then, they just don't reproduce sound well enough for critical decisions to be made.

You are probably better off with the Mackies.

We had a set mounted in the wall in my first mastering studio. I thought they sounded great. Granted, our room was an excellent listening envirornment and was very well tuned. They are not near fields. You need to give them some space. And be sure to use a high quality power amp and wiring. but since you passed on them, this post is futile.
