Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
Hi everybody. Here is a tune that B. Sabbath requested that I cover. My intention is to send this to Lt. Bob and have him add sax to this tune, but here is the first mix, as is.

Its funny. I grew up here in Michigan to the music if Bob Segar, and I've actually done a couple things with his manager, Punch Andrews. Bob lives only a couple miles from me, though I have never had the pleasure of meeting him personally. This is one of his best tunes, so I hope my version does him a bit of justice. The "Live Bullet" version is really the best. I also know his drummer from those days--Charlie Martin--who had the misfortune of being crippled by a drunk driver on I-75. Charlie was the drummer for Bob at the time of "Live Bullet" and he's also a tremendous vocalist. Connections, eh?

Anyway, I hope this is enjoyable. Let me know what you think. V1 is dedicated to B.Sabbath, who inspired the work on this song.

Great voice..

I liked this a lot, *very* good recording. Wanna hear it again when ya get Lt. Bob on this.

nice cover, and great recording. we do this cover bluegrass style. it's a great cover tune to do any style. great vocals. I also would like to hear Lt. on this. rock on.

totally cool!

I knew you would do it justice.. I like the synth after 'echos from the amplifiers.' good additive.. great vocals, and the mix is right on..

I'm surprised you didn't wait until Lt. Bob had his way with it, but I know it takes time.. That's why I have been telling people about this free tool http://www.schmeusser.siw.de/software/chainsaw.html

It's faster than waiting for the wave file in the mail..

I can't wait to hear this with Lt. Bob on it! I agree with you about the live version being better.. I feel the same way about a lot of songs.. Another example is 'Free Bird.' The studio version is O.K., but the live one is sooo much better..

Lt. Bob is going to finish this thing off proper..

thanks for the dedication! :)

I haven't had a song dedicated to me since....... since.. since... since...

Geez Crawdad this is terrific. Your vocal style is very similar to Segar, it's almost like hearing him sing it. Pro job of tracking and mixing.

I loved the bass part, particularly the small run at 2:03. Drums were great too. Synth part was nice - I think it could be rasied a small notch.

The effect over the "amplifier's ringing in your head" line was a good idea. On the vox during the outro - couldn't hit those high notes huh? I suppose you remember how Segar hit 'em. That'd be pretty tough.

I liked it a bunch.

Ya man,my favorite song!
Absoloultly fantastic,Crawdad!

I got my wife to listen with me,we both love Bob Seger.
She digs it too.

Can't wait to hear Lt. Bob's stuff.

We just have one request, please kill the explosion sound, this song is way to cool for that!
Pretty please.:D

Really great,thanks!

Another good utility is rathole. lossless data file compression for audio. sort of like a zip utility.

Great version Crawdad. I'm totally digging your style on this tune. I'd love to hear you do the Segar cover of CCR's fortunate son. Hell... any CCR. Another tune I think could use some Craw-Mac-Daddy treatment would be Willin... that truckin' tune. anywho... great job. Yet another keeper!

excellent recording............nice vocals........very well done and close in spirit to the original..........

i didn't care much for the sound effect at 2:00, but that's just a personal taste comment, no big deal..........the drums sound great...........i like the keys too..........nice job

I dug the stuff you added, personally. But (and I say this with the UTMOST respect, admiration, and every other "happy thought" I can have), you HAVE to go up at the end. Wake the neighbors, bar the door, throw back a shot of whatever...and wail those last 7 lines...It's totally in your range?!?!?!?, right?

Sorry...I know you're not gonna' live or die by this cover song, I was just WAITING for it...and then...

Seriously, very, very nice work. It was (almost) perfect

:D,

Craw-daddy-O! You have the Segar thing going on. I used to live on the banks of the Rouge River next door to the Morton salt mine. I could see I-75 when setting on my shitter and Rouge Ford from my front porch. Detroit born and bred. :D

david--thanks. one of the reasons I posted this was so you could hear how much better lt. bob will make this thing! I can't wait myself.

dtb--you gotta post the bluegrass version! seriously! i bet its incredible.

b. sabbath--thanks for the comments. the jury is kinda split on the sfx. hmmm..."should they stay or should they go"? well, this one is for you, sam!

TripleM--thanks for the feedback! I think I might be dreaming to think I could hit those high notes at the end. Segar did it in f'in full voice too. It might take "studio trickery" to achieve it. I'll mess around.

museman--"houston, we have a problem!" Folks are split on the SFX. I guess the question is: would anybody really miss 'em if they were gone? I could fill the holes another way--like slide git or something. Anyway, thanks for the listen, and please extend thanks to the missus as well!

jr#97--thanks for the listen. I have a pretty cool version of Willin' I could put together one of these days. Always loved Lowell!

powderfinger--Thanks for the nice comments. I understand about the SFX. getting split decision on that item! Hey, thats what first drafts are for, right?

chrisharris--look, as soon as I get that 'operation' I think I will be able hit those high notes! You'd be able to date me then, too! Oh--Segar can't hit those notes anymore either! :D

....Solid cover Crawdaddy.....
....I enjoyed this a whole bunch! Im looking forward to the big, wet, sax thats gonna ride through this. Great work, ........and eagerly awaiting the finished tune!!!

I liked the drums...and the extra stuff you put in...because it makes it a tad different...just like I enjoyed hearing you sing it instead of Seger...

You have a great voice... and really did this cover justice.

oh yeah..the wife is a die-hard Seger fan too...so I called her in and 'ran it by her'.. she gave it the thumbs up!:)

Jam up job Crawdad. The recording is EXCELLENT.Id like to be a fly on the wall while you are in the recording process.Im sure I could improve my lame ass game by 50% or so if I could.

I've always liked this tune an this is a better version than I ve ever heard a cover band do of it.Good Job.

Track rat--You must have posted just as I was posting--I missed you there! I know just the area you are talking about. Didn't know you were a Detroit boy! Segar is Detroit midwest all the way. He wrote some great songs too. besides Turn the page, Beautiful Loser, Night Moves, Fire Down Below, Against The Wind, 2+2, etc. Mellencamp really tagged himself as the midwest rocker, but Segar is miles beyond him, I think.

Guernica--I'm ready to send the "master" his tracks as we speak. I'm sure he will elevate this to a higher level. He always does.

mxmkr--Hey, this is really my day! A thumbs up from you AND the wife! After I get the sax tracks back, I might add some electric to this. Good idea?

Kramer--thank you, sir! By the way, I love talking about this stuff, so if you ever have any questions, fire away. Every song seems to be different as far as approach, mics, mix and FX. Just when I think I have a handle on it, I am forced to try something different. I guess thats what keeps recording interesting to me. If it was all paint by numbers I'd get bored.

I'll let this thread slide for now and post the final version when it gets put together. Thanks everone for the listens and also for the great music so many of you are making yourselves.

i usually don't listen to posts of covers cause i know i'll always be thinking of the original......but.....this is crawdad....and i really never listened to Bob Segar.

drum sound has improved 1000%. You're gettin a good use outta those NI drums. You should let those people over in the NI forum hear this. There are a bunch of guys bitching about the samples being crap. so are you programming this? how do you do that? have you gotten yourself a vkit? i myself am having a sudden craving for some real drums in my house. i almost went out a bought a real snare drum today just for playing with brushes. i miss that....enough about me.....how about that space invaders ending? I have lot's of respect for everything you do but I'm surprised no one mentioned that yet. It sounds like you got a new toy or sumpin' crawdad.

your singing is...well...always so fucking perfect it makes me want to go pull my tonsils out.

can't wait to hear
Lt.
-perpetuallywaitingforerichenryus'drumtracks-
Bob on this.

thanks for another lesson in how to make anything sound good crawdad.

Sounds Like fun to me.......( he said waiting anxiously for the tracks )

I think some of the sound effects might be a bit loud, so I can see why some people wouldn't care for them, especially when your not expecting it.. I like them though..

thanks again crawdad.. excellent version that is going to go through the roof when the Lt. gets it..

Crawdad,

Very nicely done. I especially liked the drums. What are you using?
