Do you mean on de-tuning all 4 strings lower or only the E string?

i mean from low to high, B G B E and i may sometimes have to tune everything a 1/2 step up from that.

There are certain brands offering strings for that tuning (don't ask me names because I have a weak memory for the things I'm not interested for  ...but I know I saw this kind of strings somewhere! Please google a little).
If you must stick to the average GDAE's then try using a gauge like 60/75/100/115 or similar. You'll get eventually a clean lower tuning with these as they're thicker but the neck's profile shall suffer too (if it's having a "zero profile" on normal tuning,de-tuned strings will give you some fret buzz).
HTH,

i have used 100's as my thickest string, GHS boomers and gone down to Low C tuning on all strings. i cant imagine a 4 string going down to B without some serious problems such as strings frettingout, intonation problems.

i guess you could just try it, but thats pretty much why they made 5 strings for.

saddle, neck, intonation adjustments would be needed for either tunings to keep the thing in perfect tune, but if all you play is from the 7 fret up you may not need to.

I've got a 110 tuned to C(CGCF). It intonates properly on a 35" scale.

I would say your heaviest string should be at least a 110-120.
IME good strings for this would be DR LowRiders. This is a pretty stiff string and wouldn't be as floppy as most strings.

I have a few of my basses tuned (from lowest to highest) C, G, C, F. I use a set made for a 5-string bass and just discard the smallest string. I believe the biggest string was a 125 or 130. No problems here with intonation or fret buzz, but don't expect to tune those big strings up to standard tuning! Use another bass for that. Just a note, I had to replace a bridge on one of my Mexi made fender precisions because it just couldn't handle the rumble. I replaced it with a Badass II bridge and it's been fine for years now.
