tube mics for paupers

Hey all,

I have an SP B-1 and a V-67G that serve as my vocal mics. I would consider adding a tube mic for some coloration and flavor. I only record out of my home, usually one track at a time, through the pres in a Delta Omni Studio or thru an MQ3.

Do you think a low-end tube mic would add options? If so, has anyone compared the MXL V69 and the SP TB-1? Are there other options (CAD, etc) that I should consider?

The rumor I've heard is that the "original" Groove Tubes
(pre-Alesis) are superior. This is from a local pro studio owner
who uses a Groove Tubes MD-1 regularly in his studio.

I've heard the same. Maybe they're better know that they're no longer associated with Alesis.

They're all good. I'll post some recordings with them soon.

lol! I guess it must just be better karma not to have the whole Alesis affiliation. You guys crack me up.

From what I hear, they're not the same, but the originals were all like $1,000 on up, weren't they?

Recording Mag gave them a pretty thorough review recently, and it seemed to be more legit than other reviews that just cater to the advertiser. I was pretty impressed with the fact that he didn't hold back on what he didn't like about them, etc.

I have the V69G & am quite happy with it, but I have nothing else tube to compare it to. I can say that the sound is alot cleaner than the tube cicuit on my Aphex 661.

The 1006 is like the 2001 with the Scott Dorsey mods. A very nice sounding mic.

The V69 is like a tube version of the V67, and it's fast becoming the favorite vocal mic around here.

The 990 was surprisingly good as a vocal mic due to the larger housing.

I don't know what you consider "low end," but I love my Rode NTK, and its gotten great reviews. It definitely imparts a tubey character to the sound, but it's not overly dark. It has a nice smoove top end. It's amazing on the vocalists I've tried so far (me and my sister ) I got mine for around $430. I got a quote from musiciansadvocate.com, and Guitar Center did a price match.
